NEWSOM MEETS WITH KEY TRUMP ADMIN. CABINET SECRETARY LEE ZELDIN: The readout from @GovPressOffice on California Gov. @GavinNewsom’s meeting with @LeeMZeldin of the @EPA is below. Gov press office called the hour-long meeting “cordial and productive” on a number of issues including fire recovery. “Governor Gavin Newsom and Lee Zeldin, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, met Tuesday to discuss a host of issues concerning California and the federal government, including wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles and contamination in the federally managed Tijuana River between San Diego County and Mexico. The hour-long meeting in Zeldin's Washington, D.C. office focused on federal efforts to step up inter-agency cooperation and monitoring of the Tijuana River, as well as pending federal aid to help The Palisades, Malibu and Altadena with critical infrastructure repairs, mortgage assistance, and insurance issues. The meeting was cordial and productive. Governor Newsom expressed gratitude to Administrator Zeldin for the federal government's record-breaking cleanup efforts after The Palisades and Eaton fires last year. California, in coordination with county and city officials, will continue to press for additional federal aid to speed up recovery in the region, and is grateful to Administrator Zeldin for his open spirit of engagement and commitment on this critical issue.”

@spiroferrer People talked about blaming CEQA, etc. in part for HSR's problems. But that's beside the more narrow point in the piece, which is that the Abundance deregulatory prescription faces challenges from people who don't trust elected leaders with more leeway bc of past failures

@dillonliam Totally. A boondoggle. Not sure it follows though that we would expect to see regulation take the blame in the polling. I would look at that as constrained more by issues w/ financial structures, management, lack of political support than regulation, maybe a common view?

Voters: We want infrastructure faster and cheaper. Abundance Politicians: Us too. Let's strip away regulations to make it happen. Voters: No. Because you can't build infrastructure we don't trust what you'll do with weakened regulations. politico.com/news/2026/05/1…

@spiroferrer Yes definitely mistrust for “developers” in quantitative/qualitative portions of survey. But I don’t think it should be underestimated how much people saw/see HSR as a huge government failure that has downstream effects

@dillonliam How do you square this with indications that people actually do like what the government does itself e.g. LA Metro's 87% customer satisfaction rating? Trusting a private sector enabled by weakened regulations vs trusting the state itself to deliver services seem separate issues.

I think we (as an industry) need to take really hard line on stuff like this. Fabricating quotes that get attributed to someone in a printed book imo egregiously bad behavior.
Kyle Chayka@chaykak

won't beat this kicker for irony “These A.I. errors do not, in fact, diminish the larger questions that the book raises about truth, trust and A.I. and its impact on society, democracy and editorial,” he added. nytimes.com/2026/05/19/bus…

@therossg @KarenBassLA @MSNOWNews You can disagree with me on that house. In my view the house burned down and was rebuilt so it counts. But even if you use our metrics, we were at 15 completed homes as of Monday which is behind Santa Rosa, Paradise and Altadena

@dillonliam @KarenBassLA @MSNOWNews The resident tracker says 8 rebuilds. The number she gives includes pre-fire specs like TJH. She’s a compulsive liar.

I don’t know why @KarenBassLA keeps saying that rebuilding in the Palisades is going faster than other California fires. The @MSNOWNews anchor even pushes her on it later in the interview and she admits it’s not

Just confirmed with the Newsom administration that affordable housing projects where the developer is the sole applicant, such as tax credits or the many bond-funded programs, would not qualify for this fee elimination.

The governor's impact fee elimination proposal appears even more narrow that I thought. Language seems to reflect it only applies to state-funded affordable developments where a local government is the co-applicant. So that rules out pure LIHTC projects. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026/0…

Looks like the governor's housing proposal today is going after local fees on affordable housing developments:

For all the insinuations by rivals about Becerra being a co-conspirator, the plea deal indicates that he was in the dark as his chief of staff and political aide conspired to siphon money from his campaign account
Melanie Mason@melmason

Dana Williamson, Newsom's former chief , will plead guilty to 3 counts including one related to conspiring to steal campaign funds from a dormant account of Xavier Becerra's. Factual basis for the plea says she made false statements to XB abt the funds politico.com/news/2026/05/1…
