I studied biology in college and did a lot of field work in the Sierra Nevadas with old-school hippie zoologists and biologists. An anecdote I learned is that bats hardly eat any mosquitoes at all. They can't detect them very well with echolocation and thus only incidentally eat a few here and there. However, in the 70's and 80's it became an urban legend that bats were sucking up tens of thousands of mosquitoes every night. The biologists stayed quiet and never corrected this misinformation, because it made people want to protect bats and stop clearing out their dens (there was mass phobia of bats for a while, due to a rabies scare and stories of them getting tangled in hair and biting people). What's the point of this story? Well... I know the water "used" by AI data centers isn't gone or destroyed or something. It's just put back into the water cycle, and a few incidents of it affecting the water pressure for a nearby town's crappy old infrastructure aren't the norm. However, if this is what it takes to get people to stop supporting that tech then I won't be correcting them.
