"Just build nuclear" ☢️ I recently praised China for its ability to build its latest reactors in 5-6 years. It's latest reactor, San'ao 1, completed in April this year, entered operation after 5.5 years and was on schedule. A monumental feat. However, even the 'engineering state' didn't simply one-shot nuclear buildout. Note that previous Chinese reactors were delayed. Those that began construction around 2010 took almost as long as Vogtle to build. Goes to show how difficult building new nuclear plants. Cutting costs and timelines requires experience, which can only materialise through a multi-decadal commitment to buildout.

@gnievchenko If the foreign FOAKs you are referring to are the M310 from the 80s/90s, then yes.

From my colleague @ryrivard in Morning Energy this morning: New Jersey’s Office of Weights and Measures is looking into the Freedom Fuel Network and “conducting inspections to ensure that they are compliant with State law," which makes it illegal to sell gas below cost.

You know Josh Kerr, the UK guy who smashed the mile record, and all the Tour de France cyclists elevation train for improved oxygen uptake? Well here's some short term data: Returned to Boston from a week in N New Mexico, and my low (pink) iOS O2 numbers are now normal (blue).

@stromhandler @gnievchenko Well, if we had ZERO renewables, but lotsa more gas generation, the retail price would be the same. However, there would be a lot more GHG emissions. This is why we need to increase the amount of wind/PV + green storage, so we can limit the amount of required natgas generation.

It makes you wonder what the stack would look like without that renewable generation and what type of generation we would need to start to meet demand, right? And then you might start to question if the renewables are the actual problem or if the true problems are the ones priced higher in the merit

Hmm i wonder what's driving high power prices in Europe. Could it be renewables?

@KeithDPatch The article is getting quite dense as is, so I'm going to skip cost curves.

@gnievchenko I look forward to it! ↙️Are you going to tie your cost reduction analysis in with Learning Curves? ↘️And per McNulty curves, I wonder how long it has taken new nuke plant designs to reach 100% output?

What's also worth noting is that nuclear FOAKs will take at least twice as long to build as foreseen, regardless of who's building them - see China testing EPR and AP1000. Even their homegrown design - the Hualong 1 - suffered long overruns at the beginning.

@stromhandler @gnievchenko As Gnievo mentioned in his reply to me, the last (most expensive) power plant needed to meet real-time demand sets the clearing price that all accepted suppliers receive. Renewables are generally cheaper, & are dispatched first.

The analogy is closer than one might think. The Germans learned a lot from the American Goddard, who was ignored in his own country. Kinda’ similar to the solar panel and battery situation.

I received my first LinkedIn block from Roberto Zermeño yesterday. He lists himself as a HySET Erasmus Mundus Scholar, so I expected a fact-based discussion. I corrected multiple errors in his AI-generated hydrogen/ammonia/methanol post; instead of responding, he blocked me.
