I don’t know if it’s because of Golden Week, but downtown Kyoto was literal hell to walk through. Way too many people, especially in Nishiki Market. Is it always like this? And I thought Tokyo was a mess to walk through.

@HakataQueen Makes it easier to know if you can actually be long term friends with them since everyone is so transient in Tokyo. Most of my friends left after 2-3 years 😔

2+ months living in Tokyo now and I’ve noticed every foreigner you meet always asks the same questions within 30 sec of meeting you (1) do you live in Japan (2) how long have you been here (3) what visa are you on (4) what do you do for work (5) do you speak Japanese fluently

@bonchieredstate JetBlue officially stated they would eliminate Spirit after merger and turn everything into JetBlue (more expensive), and more often than not merger like that would lead to layoffs and trim redundancies. So what exactly would that merger solve long term?

Nowhere in this article do they mention the Biden administration stopped a merger that might have saved the airline and that Democrats did a victory dance over it. This is the most pervasive media bias. It’s not the outright lies. It’s what they purposely omit.

Spirit Airlines, an impish upstart that shook the industry with its irreverent ads and deep discount fares, announced Saturday that it has gone out of business after 34 years. apnews.com/article/spirit…

Spirit Airlines died tonight at the hands of the socialist crusader, Elizabeth Warren She must be so proud to add another casket to her achievements. Tonight at 3am, Spirit turns off the lights. 14,000 jobs gone. 30+ smaller airports lose service. JetBlue offered $3.8 BILLION in cash to buy Spirit in 2022. Shareholders, flight attendants union, literally everyone voted yes. The combined company would have held 9% of the US market against a Big 4 that already owned 80%. For anyone who understands numbers: 9% isn’t a monopoly against 80%. Warren said no. She wrote letters. She pressured Buttigieg. Biden’s DOJ sued. A federal judge killed the deal in January 2024. Her argument: the merger would cost consumers $1 billion a year. Now look at her collateral damage she dusts under the rug. 510 pilots gone in the months after. 1,800 flight attendants furloughed in December. 14,000 jobs in 2023. 7,500 last week. Zero tonight. And that’s just the people in Spirit uniforms. Catering goes. Fuel guys go. Baggage crews, gate agents, airport coffee shops, hotels and rental cars in 70 cities Spirit flew to. Every airline job carries 3 more on its back. 40,000 people out of work because of one woman’s moronic crusade against the market. And the math ain’t mathing. Spirit abandoned 90 routes during the death spiral. Fares on those routes are up 14% on average. Oakland to Newark: $135 to $288. Fort Myers to San Juan: $92 to $219. Kansas City to Newark up 66%. That’s reality. Not some BS number from a “study.” So @SenWarren tell me how this saves the consumer money? Cheap carriers in a market drop fares 21% across the board. Southwest did this in the 90s and saved Americans $68 BILLION over 20 years. Warren killed it. That’s what moronic politicians led by socialism do. Then with her own blind arrogance, she tweeted Spirit’s collapse is “a Biden win for flyers.” A win. 14,000 people are reading termination letters tonight. And she’s taking credit. This is socialism in 2026. A senator who’s never made payroll thinks she knows how to run a market better than the people who own and work in the company. She saved you a billion on imaginary paper. She cost you ten times that in real life. She didn’t protect consumers from anything. 14,000+ will go from working to welfare. She will make sure to blame billionaires, hardworking tax payers, AI, capitalism and whatever monster they will make up tomorrow hiding under your bed. Higher taxes. Fewer jobs. More expensive everything. She called it a win. I hope you enjoy winning.

"I saw this gorgeous photo on social media, and I was like, ‘How can I get myself here as fast as possible’? If you don’t get that photo, it’s like, what’s the point of the trip?” These are exactly the kind of tourists are ruining Japan nytimes.com/2026/04/26/wor…

@NoahOskow The first time I came to Japan, the yen was ¥240 to the US dollar. It later hit around ¥300. That was in 1981, the boom time for Japan. The exchange rate doesn't matter that much if you're both earning and spending in Japan. It only matters if you travel or send money abroad.

The dollar rate sitting at nearly 160 yen over the past few days - still hard to believe the overall trend is this high, and may go higher. Great for inbound tourists, but very difficult exchange rate for anyone getting paid in yen here in Japan.

Bullshit shrinkflation now becoming more noticeable in Japan. Morinaga reduced the size of their milk packaging from 1000ml to 900ml while keeping the price unchanged.

The GOJ adopted amendments to the Passport Act yesterday raising the application fee for 10 year passports by ¥7,000 to ¥9,000 and ¥4,500 for 5 year passports for those under the age of 18. It scraps 5 year passports for those above the age of 18. news.web.nhk/newsweb/na/na-…

@Colin_P_A_Jones Most of Europe and Korea are still cheap to process. This just puts Japan more in line with the UK, US and AUS who have some of the most expensive visa costs but higher salaries.

@shinobu_books For sure, but from what I’ve read people make it sound like the backlog in Tokyo is such that no one even looks at your application until a year after it’s submitted (I’m sure there are exceptions though).

Glad I was able to get PR over a decade ago when application waiting times in Takamatsu were like 6 months I hear waiting times in Tokyo are over 1.5 years now Can’t blame Japan for only giving PR to those they want here long term, but I hear reasons for rejection can be opaque
