UPDATE: I emailed the RCMP with this information for them to post a correction to their press release, but instead of doing that, they doubled down and said it was correct and that I was confused about driver-assist vs self-driving technology, when in fact its the RCMP that is confused. I stated in my email that Tesla's Autopilot and FSD are Level 2 driver-assist systems and are legal to use in B.C., with due care and attention. What’s illegal are Level 3+ systems that don’t require driver monitoring. There are currently no (zero) consumer vehicles available to purchase today with this technology. I've followed up again stressing this clarification between what is Level 2 and Level 3 and what is currently available on the market, and that a correction to the press release is still required. It’s concerning that the RCMP is presenting this in a way that’s inaccurate or misleading, especially when it relates to how the law is understood by the public and media. I'll paste their full reply in the next post for transparency, and if I get another reply, I'll post a follow up on that too.
