@Brady_H That would be fun. I run for 5-8mi about once a week just for fun (yes I enjoy it) so I will have to step it up. What’s a good first marathon time for someone my age, 50, who ran X country senior year HS (lighter then)? And 6 mo to train or 4 sufficient?

I always laugh at yo-yo’s who don’t have the 1st clue what information the President had that forced this decision. Truett Hanes (yes @CamHanes son) set the pull-up WR, then ran progressively faster marathons (in jeans), brought his time down to sub 2:30 & now is going for Olympic trial qualification. I wouldn’t bet against him. Or any Hanes for that matter. His mantra “it’s just pain”…

@tomcoppens_ @hubermanlab @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes I'm willing to stick to any training program that helps me improve. My biggest concern is pacing. Is it supposed to feel like any other race where you're going out hard from the start? Or are you supposed to start out comfortable and ease into a faster pace?

There’s a lot of variables. But in my opinion if you run 50-70miles per week and are between 10-15% a sub 3h marathon is possible for more people than they’d think while carrying decent muscle mass A lot depends on training program and their consistency (and willingness to stick to their training)

@tomcoppens_ @hubermanlab @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes Im 36 now but in my mid 20s in college I ran for the cross country club and could easily hold 6 min paces for our 5 mile races. But I was also 40 pounds lighter.

@tomcoppens_ @hubermanlab @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes Im decently fast for my frame and mid mileage races. I can hold a 7 min pace for an 8 mile tempo, I just dont know how to transfer that same pace to 26 miles.

But I would like to be slightly above average and push myself to my limit. I also dont plan on being super jacked. I'm interested in finding the right balance where I can push my PRs as much as possible.

@hubermanlab @Keithbonney @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes @Brady_H Average weight of an elite male marathoner is 55-60kgs, av height 5'6" to 5'8". BMI 18.5 to 21. If you want to optimize marathon times you need to get light for your frame - no way around that.

@hankfrank @Brady_H @hubermanlab @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes How do you discover what pace you're capable of holding in a marathon race? I run my 8 mile tempos at a low 7 min/mile. But I feel like thats to hard for 26 miles.

I’ll add a data point here. In 2024 I went from ~166 lbs to ~185 lbs while training for marathons. Ran 2:55 in May and 2:51 in September. Averaged ~60 mile weeks plus ~7 hrs of cycling, ~30k steps per day, and lifted 2–3x per week. Most of the gain was probably fat, but the point is simple: it’s not hard to maintain or even gain weight while marathon training if you eat and lift intentionally.

@Brady_H @hubermanlab @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes Thank you! At 205 pounds I ran my best time at 3:36 for my 3rd ever marathon. One day I'd like shoot for 3 hours or less. How do I know if that's realistic for me?

@hubermanlab @Keithbonney @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes It’s totally feasible to run “marathon miles” and maintain lean mass and strength. Maintenance with ~2 heavy sessions per week is probably all you need. Key is adequate calories and protein too!

@Keithbonney @Cryptoweb3draga @CamHanes Tough one. Maybe @Brady_H knows the best tradeoff- it’s outside my wheelhouse. I’ll run 10miles but have no desire to run 26 but have respect for anyone pushing themselves.
