Hello everyone! This week’s update was going to be about the comically bad travel day my dad and I endured on the way to Miami and it still kind of is, but I’ll be doing the highlight reel instead of the full ridiculous day. We didn’t really have a wait to get on the plane, which was nice. When we got to the end of the jet bridge around 7am, we met two of the most amazing grounds crew people I’ve ever met. They were upbeat and friendly, and they made traveling on a 737-900 (some of you just heard the “dun dun DUN” that comes with that statement) much less stressful than it could have been. We learned we were not on an Airbus at the same time we met our new friends. For the uninitiated, when traveling by air with a power wheelchair, the size of the cargo hold door is hugely important because you want to be able to get the chair in and out of the plane upright; no leaning or tilting. This was an unexpected hiccup but the ground crew made it happen and we were able to fly on the Boeing. The next airbus leg wasn’t until 4pm. We knew because one of the ground crew people ran up the jet bridge to find out in case they couldn’t roll the chair on upright with the back leaned all the way down. They took a picture of the chair safely stowed and came back to the cabin to show us before takeoff. Above and beyond. Thank you, thank you to both of you. On the train from Fort Lauderdale to Miami, I met a very nice Navy veteran (his hat gave it away) who was traveling with his wife and telling me a story I couldn’t quite hear over the train. I told him as much and he said, “Uh huh!” just enthusiastically enough to tell me he couldn’t hear me either. I was able to make out that he had a trip next week to Columbia, I hope. I definitely shouted, “Have a great trip next week!” as I got off the train but he likely didn’t hear me. Really nice guy. Best conversation I never had. We were having dinner and drinks at the hotel bar, marveling at the day we’d just had when I heard a familiar voice behind me and I got to introduce my dad to Audrey (P9) and Derick, who are a couple of the best people I know. We had a great time talking and catching up. I’m so glad I get to be on this journey with Audrey. Since we’re cyborg twins (I’m older by a few hours) we have the same follow-up schedule, so we’re able to visit every so often in Miami and it’s always too short a visit. I got to talk shop with a couple of my neurosurgeons which is always fun. I appreciate the time they take out of their busy schedules to talk to me. I get to talk about new insights I’ve had about how my brain works and they’re as excited as I am. As always, thank you to my fantastic team at @umneurosurgery and @buonicontifund. Special thanks to Letitia and David for getting a Hoyer lift to me last minute. “But Nick!” You may be saying, “I thought you brought your own travel Hoyer!” We did. No further comment. Extra special shoutout to my dad. He was a trooper and hung in there the whole day. Valuable lessons were learned and we had good time together even if a lot of it was frustrating.
