The sight of a snakehead fish protecting its young from a school of predators is more thrilling than an action movie.

i think it’s unbecoming for the head of strategic futures of a company that wants to reshape the life of every human on the planet to be doing the “i’m just a little guy” routine
Dean W. Ball@deanwball

I’m afraid to tell you that it is effectively impossible to do the kind of writing I used to do on this website, not because anyone at OpenAI censors me but because of the sheer volume of hostility I get for sharing my analysis as a frontier lab employee. I enjoyed writing quick takes on this website for one basic reason: I could get rapid feedback on my own ideation process in real time. Post the early version of the take here, see the criticism; then refine, sharpen, and repeat. Unfortunately now that feature of this site is gone, because the feedback I get is now almost exclusively colored by resentment at the fact that I work at a frontier lab or other forms of hatred for my employer. The feedback signal is essentially useless now, so writing on here is not fruitful for me anymore. Literally everything I write now is responded to with “of course you said that because .” I am truly just writing what I think and would have written anyway, but everyone reads what I say in the shrieking tone of “this is what openai thinks!!!!” (to be clear, my posts are not what openai thinks). This is an unpleasant and more importantly unproductive pattern for me. I anticipate that the shape of this account will change significantly as a result. I do not currently know how. It will not become a LinkedIn feed. It will change in some other way. It will no longer be a real-time accounting of my own thinking as it develops, since this is precisely the thing that seems impossible to do now. That will have to shift to private channels.

@hackt1v1st @LilithLovett Your diamond analogy fails because diamonds can't be combined. You can *meld* Earth gold and Alien gold together. Once they are fused, there are no 'two categories' anymore it’s just gold.

@LilithLovett So have you heard about diamonds? I don't think you have. I am 100% sure if anything like this happens (I don't think it will obviously), there will be 2 categories... "Earth Gold" and "Alien gold"... The former one will remain costly. Dimonds are a prime example.

"b-but it'll make gold useless" Good, based even. You have any idea how much our world can fundamentally change for the better overnight if gold became as abundant as aluminum? When we can use it freely for utility? It'd vastly improve every aspect of society in a month, weeks.

JUST IN🚨: Scientists discovered an asteroid with $10,000,000,000,000,000,000 worth of precious metals on it. It's floating between Mars and Jupiter, and scientists are trying to figure out how we can extract its resources.

There is another way to eliminate flanges with a timing belt: Herringbone, baby. That's right, they make belts (mainly Continental SilentSync) with a herringbone pattern (specifically, helical offset teeth) to keep belt tracking automatically centered on the pulleys. As you might imagine, creating the pulleys presents some challenges, but beyond the flange less design, these belts are very smooth & quiet thanks to the helical teeth (just like gears). I've yet to try this design myself. The pulleys would be gorgeous though, I'll tell you that much...

Unless you're into bikes you may not have seen this style of belt before. This is a Gates Carbon Drive. It uses a central channel in the belt to keep it centered on the sprockets. The belt itself is reinforced with carbon fiber strands & strong enough to replace a chain. No maintenance, no noise, no lubrication necessary. There's a very slight hit in efficiency compared to a clean, fresh chain, but once dirt & higher power enter the picture, they prove superior in this regard. Gates offers many different sprocket designs & sizes for different applications, which is a good thing because they are not easy to machine compared to standard timing pulleys. I tried to make an off-the-shelf design work in this project, but sometimes you just have to go full custom, and that's exactly what I've done here. Can't wait to share more details of what this is when we get further along... Anyway, if you have an application that you're considering using a chain or timing belt and need a low profile setup, be sure to give this system a look over. It has many positives in its favor.
