Bloodline Isn’t Enough: Africa’s New Dynasties Must Choose Inhouse on Merit and Common Sense Too Across Africa, from President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea to Paul Biya in Cameroon, Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo (Brazzaville), and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, long-ruling leaders are at varying stages of constructing political dynasties. In each case, sons are being positioned as successors, in a drift that echoes the monarchical habits of bygone eras rather than modern republican states. Yet even within these dynastic projects, uncomfortable questions persist. Why are daughters almost entirely absent from succession plans, even where they appear, by public record or private assessment, more clear-headed or administratively capable than their brothers? And in systems where these leaders often have multiple wives and children, including those born outside formal marriage, on what basis is legitimacy determined? Why should the able and promising son of a mistress be passed over in favour of the First Lady/Wife’s older son? If all are, in essence, the patriarch’s children, what hierarchy – legal, cultural, or politica – decides their worth? The question of primogeniture also sits uneasily in modern republics. Should succession favour the eldest son by tradition, or the most competent by merit? What of the thoughtful middle child, or the last born who has demonstrated restraint, intellect, or administrative skill? And where no autocrat's child meets the standard, why not consider a capable nephew or niece? At its core, the issue is not merely dynastic ambition, but the quiet suspension of common sense. Must the logic of family rule inevitably override competence, fairness, and the broader national interest?

I have noticed that many pple are addressing the protection of sovereignty bill without looking into the motives behind the bill in the context of security, our democracy, social aspects, etc It is absurd that everyone things his or her side must carry the day.

BoU Governor (Economics PhD, Liverpool): Sovereignty Bill will affect our reserves, and lead to significant currency depreciation. A country without reserves isn’t sovereign. I see the NRM has deployed @job_matua & @TumukundeTT—who are economically illiterate—to defend the Bill.

"Chairman, a country without reserves is not sovereign. The potential of this Bill to destabilize Uganda’s balance of payments is our primary concern as a central bank. For example, last financial year the overall balance of payment surplus was USD 1.5 billion. That’s how we were able to increase our reserve coverage by USD 1.5 billion. Today as we speak our reserves are close to USD 6 billion. Why? Because these inflows have been coming in. The moment you tamper with these inflows here, we risk running down our reserves, and that is economic disaster for a country.” Governor Atingi-Ego on the Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026 in an appearance before Parliament today.

Dr. @kizzabesigye1 yafuna the Mpanga’s nga kirabo. I was here thinking that if Baguma was JB Katutsi we would find a recreation of this in his memoir in future. In 2005 it was Daudi Mpanga against CID head Elizabeth Kutesa and Deputy DPP Byabakama. 21 years later in 2026 it’s Frederick Mpanga against Kyomuhendo. The constant is the accused.

This morning, we were back at Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court regarding the case against NUP Deputy president (Buganda) Hon Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi and others. The prosecution side failed to present committal papers as earlier expected, indicating that the case file had been called by the office of the DPP. It is clear they have no evidence to support their wild allegations against the accused persons, hence the ping-pong! #FreeAllPoliticalPrisoners

Y'all are quick to say "mental health matters" but only when it's past saving. When someone is struggling in front of you, it's jokes, rumors, and judgment. Nobody truly checking on them or offering real support. Then when something heartbreaking happens, now everybody cares. Real talk, please start showing up for people while they're still asking for help and not when it turns into a tribute.
