Wind’s in the east. The answer to the question “what is the best part of living in Kentucky?” Easy, it’s the seasons. Fresh snow turns to flowers and trees blooming. The heat and humidity of summer bring in the smell of rain thunderheads on the sunset horizon. The summer evenings show off the beauty of firefly’s AND the color of fall may as well be the 8th wonder of the world. The seasons also ground you, connect you to the changes happening around. The last 30months have been wild. I joked all of 2025 that the ag industry turned in November 2024. After watching markets and demand shifts throughout the year and catching up with old friends over the month it does seem the winds are shifting, at the dismay or hubris of ag industry. I know moves we made over the last two years aren’t conventional and in no way was meat to “rock the boat.” We are just moving our sails to catch the winds of a changing seasons. Winds in the east.

Won’t be long now. Tap of the button from anywhere in the world will set Geneva down the path to plant 2026 bourbon seeds. Available for sipping ~2034. Cheers!

I still remember the sunset the day I told my dad I was going to farm for a living. When  I finished stumbling over my plan he just put his hand on my shoulder and said “that life will be the hardest life to live, but I promise it will be a good life.” My family’s dream of America started here 250 years ago. After the war Capt Sam Pottinger settled here to start a self-sustaining community of agriculture and industry. A lot. A lot. Of things changed, but the old brick meat house he built still stands across the road, Pottinger creek feeding underground streams still winds through this valley; and the people still reflect the soul of that dream. When Leah and I purchased this farm from my family we knew ag was at an inflection point. I used to think the whole industry needed a makeover for the world coming, maybe not. Maybe it just needs a blend of our future and our past. We started Affinity Farms as a legacy and a beacon to mirror the ebb and flow of tech and heritage. An industry built to adapt and serve the community. Agriculture is our foundation and the few of us left are working to build a future we will not live in. I believe in that future despite the stresses of weather, dwindling peers and consumer doubt. Yeah it’s not an easy life but so far it’s been a good one. We’re 250 years in.  Just getting started. #f2f26

Tatum was an incredible person, dedicated to public service and a role model for so many new or seasoned in a career serving people. Very sad to see the news. Praying for her family. I know she is being welcomed into heaven with open arms.
Congressman Andy Barr@RepAndyBarr

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I announce the passing of Tatum Dale, my longtime District Director, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Campaign Manager. My full statement is below: “When I first ran to serve the Sixth District, Tatum Dale was one of the first people who volunteered to help. Born and raised in Murray, Tatum came to the University of Kentucky for college, and I’m forever grateful that she stayed to serve alongside me. For over 15 years, Tatum was the heart and soul of my team. She held almost every job in my office—Scheduler, Field Representative, Deputy District Director, District Director, then Deputy Chief of Staff and Campaign Manager for my U.S. Senate run. “With Tatum’s leadership, my office favorably closed thousands of cases for Kentuckians—helping veterans, seniors, and families throughout our district. She fought to deliver funds to support dozens of community projects across our Commonwealth. She loved helping people and was a servant of others, just as Christ envisioned us all to be. Maybe that’s why her birth in heaven is a shared birthday with our Lord and Savior. While our hearts are broken, our team finds peace and hope knowing that Tatum is now home with Christ, resting comfortably in the arms of her Savior. “Tatum loved her family, her faith, and her Commonwealth. She made me a better Congressman, our staff better public servants, and we will all miss her forever. From Murray to Lexington and everywhere in the Commonwealth that she touched, we hope you will all join us in praying for Tatum’s family and friends—and be forever inspired by her memory to serve others.”

Corn is in the bin and with these last two loads soybeans are out of the field and in the bin! Refilled Geneva to plant cover crop ahead of this next rain event. I cannot begin to thank Sam, Mike, Samuel, my dad and Leah enough for the long hours and hard work to get the 2025 crop planted, cared for and harvested. One of the toughest years yet and I’m a bit sad to see come to a close. Cannot wait to see what next year’s crop brings!

BLOT: problem the market is asking us to solve. Agriculture is the base for civilization. Without it we do not have highly specialized fields of study/application like architects, doctors, engineers, electricians, etc. It evolves and changes when we need it too. No clue if this is the evolution, but it’s offering solutions to a problem the market is asking us to solve.

Kentucky autumn on the farm is a beautiful dance. Just like any good dancer you need to throw in a few new moves to keep the dance fun and entertaining. When the beat of the music changes, you must adjust to the rhythm to keep pace, even if it means throwing in a couple of new moves. Corn harvest 2025 is finished!! Just ahead of the rain too. Wheat and barley are in the ground. Our autonomous tractor planted farms in the wee hours of the morning this week to get us down to the last few acres of rye. Cheers!

@BradyD78 It’s been a game changer on our farm in more ways than anticipated. And lowers the capital investment to farm bigger acres. Changes the economies of scale.

I’m probably in the minority, but this stuff gets me excited about the future! *Why wouldn’t I want this robot planting wheat while I'm harvesting soybeans? *Why wouldn’t I want him drilling soybeans while I’m planting corn? *Why wouldn’t I want him double cropping soybeans while I’m harvesting wheat? *Why wouldn’t I want him planting sorghum sudan hay grazer while I’m baling hay?

Today we start a new chapter at Affinity Farms. I always remember my dad talking about grandpa bringing home the first tractor on the farm 75years ago and his dad telling him, standing behind a horse drawn plow, get that thing out of here you’re going to tear down every piece of corn in this field. I always wondered what it was like seeing that transformation, living in a time where machinery replaced horses on the farm. Today we started what I think will be transformational not just for our farm, but for so many. We parked our big planters and tractors in the shed and set loose autonomy on the farm. Handing over all of our fall seeding for cash crop barley, rye and wheat. And planting all of our corn and soybeans next spring. While far from full autonomy on the farm it’s a giant leap of faith in that direction. There will be many hiccups along the way, but it’s something worth trying! Huge thank you to AIT, Precision Planting, and Sabanto for helping bring autonomy to row cropping. And a huge thank you to the farm team for the trust and commitment as we steer through the coming challenges and opportunities! Can’t wait to see what the future holds!

@KentuckyAF @SabantoAg @PrecisionPlant What are you using star link for in this instance? I have wondered how far away we are from using it for auto guidance. It would be nice to have a subscription that can be used for more than just guidance....

Starlink installed!! Another layer of reliability to remote in the planting monitor and the tractor controls.

I agree! We only farm 2500 acres and the cost of equipment has pushed us out of operating larger equipment that’s 15years or newer. Price for price the small frame in today’s numbers match the size of our operation or smaller. And much easier to scale because you can integrate small machines to talk to one another. Professor Shockley at UK college of ag will hopefully be rolling out solid numbers to do cost benefit analysis soon!

@KentuckyAF This is where I see the future going so excited to follow along! Seems a more budget friendly option than big autonomy as well to me 🤷🏼‍♂️

It can be integrated that way. We opted to keep the to OS separate while we determine what would be a stop now or a get to end of pass. So setting up the planter monitor not only to be able to remote in live and make changes on the monitor remotely, but also having push notifications sent to the phone or iPad where you can determine if the you need to stop the tractor with the automation OS. The more we plant with it the more we’ll know what’s a stop now issue and what is a remote in and see issue. We are learning.

@KentuckyAF How do the safeties work with a planter? If a row has an issue will it stop so you can fix it?

My dad has an incredible mind for innovation. I would spend a lot of evenings after homework and sports practice in the shop watching him-and helping if I could- mold metal to meet the needs of the farm. I also remember the costs he and my mom endured. Today I am understanding more clearly those costs they endured and am more thankful than ever they chose to press on. George Washington said that “agriculture is the most healthful, most useful, and most noble employment of man.” George Washington Carver said “since new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way possible” Despite the onset today of immense pressure of some people in industry I find it necessary to press on.
