This quote from @VanessaVakharia on the Math Therapy podcast hit home. I’m still relearning alongside my teachers. That vulnerability is the point. Conceptual relearning + vertical picture = everything shifts. 💙

The missing ingredient in how we learn is play. Not a surprise to anyone who's watched a 4-year-old figure out how the world works. A massive surprise to a system that decided math means sitting still and following steps. We can do better. We have to.

NEW VIDEO: The belief that play and learning are separate is a relatively new idea — before the last few centuries, children around the world spent most of their time learning through play. So, how can we build this into how we teach and learn in schools? t.ted.com/lxErL81

3/5 Boredom came first. And it starts long before middle school. If we lose students in early childhood math, we do not just lose engagement. We lose identity. The story a child tells themselves about whether they belong in this subject.

2/5 We have built an entire scaffold of interventions around math anxiety while leaving the classroom conditions that created it completely intact. Treating symptoms without tracing the source is not healing. It is maintenance.

Have you ever called on students to ask them for an answer or explanation and gotten the feeling that they were just repeating what the previous students had said? This video and blog post might explain the psychology of why that happens. robertkaplinsky.com/psychology-cla…

Leadership shouldn’t belong to the loudest voice in the room. It should belong to every kid. That’s what When Kids Lead is all about: ➡️ Developing leadership in all students ➡️ Giving educators real, doable structures ➡️ Shifting leadership from titles to daily action Because when more kids lead… everything changes.

Received a copy of a @DrBradJohnson book through a drawing on his X page. I chose "Coffee with the Custodian." Just finished the book and cannot recommend it enough. As someone who has sat in the same chair for 15+ years, it was a great reminder of the importance of relationships
