Reggie Dillard is FREE and Elkhart County’s most recent exoneree!! It was a perfect day celebrating this man and his freedom (aside from missing @ElliotSlosar, whose years of work led to this moment)

"the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide." - CCC 2267 Pope Leo XIV sent a video message to participants gathered at DePaul University in Chicago for the 15th anniversary of Illinois' abolition of the death penalty. The Holy Father's address drew on the Church's consistent teaching that the dignity of every human person must be protected at every stage of life, including at its end.

I mean, what more can you say about @NDLawEJC? I've lost track of the wins. They're like the Curt Cignetti of exonerations. They can't be beat! In all seriousness, their clients are REAL people whose entire lives have been destroyed from State misconduct. Iris has spent 21 YEARS in prison. I can't even imagine.

When you practice on the defense side, you rarely achieve victories. Sometimes a "victory" is just ensuring your client receives his day in court. But on occasion, we do get relief for our clients. Today was one of those days. My client worked very hard for 15 years to serve her sentence without problems in the D.O.C., to avail herself of every rehabilitative program she could, and to get her life on track when she was released. All while she was labeled as a predator and required to publicly register. The label "predator" is bad enough. But many people don't know that there is something just as, if not more, punitive than the label: it's the inability to set foot on school property. As a mother with two kids in the school system, I have no idea how people do it. But my client did. And today a judge reviewed expert evaluations indicating that she was no longer a threat, and the judge granted my client relief. The "predator" label has been removed. But more than that, my client will now be able to drop her kids off at school, to attend their band recitals, to cheer for them at their sporting events, and to watch them walk at graduation. If they get sick at school, she can pick them up. It sounds like a small thing. But when you can't do those things, it becomes all-consuming. So today was a good day. Not just for her, but for me. These are the days that keep me going.

@IUHabeas Yeah I saw that and had the same reaction. And even if Freeman had said that, Glossip makes crystal clear that the State has an independent duty to correct false testimony irrespective of what defense counsel knows.

I will say this about the Napue / Glossip claim: At page 92 of the brief, the State cites United States v. Freeman, 650 F. 3d 673, 678, 681 (7th Cir. 2011). tinyurl.com/5xped32k If anyone can find in Freeman what the State say is there, let me know. #Delphi #RichardAllen

I had planned to brag about these folks this morning, but I honestly cannot find the words that would do them justice. What they have done is just impressive. And the craziest part? They're not done yet. Several potential exonerations still in the works. Someone needs to write a book about the clinic and their work in Elkhart County.
