AFTER UGANDAS HORRIBLE TREATMENT AT THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY as revealed on X by many people this week! I asked AI: What are the top ten south African companies operating in Uganda? How much profits do they make annually? How much do they give back to Uganda as a percentage of their income. Is Uganda and South African trade reciprocal or imbalanced. What is the total trade balance? In which currency do these multi nationals remit their profits back to South Africa? How does this affect the availability and price of US dollars for Ugandans. ANSWER: South Africa is one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Uganda, with over 78 companies currently operating in the country. These firms dominate key sectors such as telecommunications, banking, and retail. Top South African Companies in Uganda The following are the major South African entities currently operating in Uganda: • MTN Uganda: The largest telecommunications provider in the country. • Stanbic Uganda Holdings: The leading financial services group and the largest bank in Uganda. • Absa Bank Uganda: A major player in the banking sector following its rebranding from Barclays. • MultiChoice Uganda (DStv/GOtv): Dominates the pay-TV market. • Sanlam Insurance: A leading provider of life and general insurance services. • Old Mutual Uganda: Provides integrated financial services, including insurance and investment management. • Woolworths: Operates premium retail stores in major malls like Lugogo Mall. • Eskom Uganda: Operates major hydropower plants (Nalubale and Kira) under a management contract. • Nile Breweries: A subsidiary of AB InBev (which has strong South African roots through SABMiller). • Protea Hotels (by Marriott): A major player in the hospitality and tourism sector. Annual Profits (2025 Data) The combined annual "extraction" or earnings from all South African firms in Uganda is estimated at nearly $1 billion. Reported 2025 profits for the largest firms include: • MTN Uganda: Shs 678.8 billion (~$183 million). • Stanbic Uganda: Shs 591 billion (~$159 million). AfricanFinancials +3 Contributions and Give Back Multinationals in Uganda typically pay lower effective tax rates—roughly 20 percentage points lower than large domestic firms—due to tax treaties and profit-shifting strategies. However, large firms maintain significant CSR and tax footprints: • MTN Uganda: Contributed Shs 5.1 billion to the MTN Foundation for community projects and Shs 1.5 trillion in direct/indirect taxes in 2025. • Stanbic Uganda: Paid Shs 273 billion in taxes in the first half of 2025 alone. • Specific Percentages: CSR spending often amounts to less than 1% of net income (e.g., MTN's Shs 5.1B foundation spend vs. Shs 678B profit is ~0.75%). Trade Balance: Imbalanced Trade between Uganda and South Africa is highly imbalanced in favor of South Africa. • Total Trade Balance (2024): Uganda imported goods worth $566.71 million from South Africa while exporting only $48 million. • Top Imports (to Uganda): Gold ($401M), semi-finished iron, and vehicles. • Top Exports (from Uganda): Coffee ($4.64M), live plants, and aircraft parts. Currency Remittance and Economic Impact • Remittance Currency: Multinationals generally remit profits in US Dollars (USD) after converting their local earnings (Ugandan Shillings). • Impact on USD Availability: Large-scale profit repatriation creates a high demand for dollars in the local market. • Effect on Price: This consistent demand can lead to the depreciation of the Ugandan Shilling against the dollar, making USD more expensive for local Ugandans and increasing the cost of imported goods. Isnt it time to assess and review our relationship terms with these companies? Is it true that they all make US $ 1 billion from us? Why does a wealthy company like @mtnug give less than 1% back to CSR on their self declare income? Why do they pay less taxes than local domestic companies? Its time we talk how we do business for our benefit

Honestly, what kind of cruelty is this? Man comes home drunk and sends his children to sleep outside in the cold. This girl's tears are so heartbreaking, but they're still carrying their books ready for school, perhaps seeking a sense of normalcy? Arrest that criminal!!

❗️DID YOU KNOW: Only 1 team in history has ever completed a come back after losing their first Champions League tie by 2 goals at home. It was Manchester United in 2019, led by Marcus Rashford.

Indian Doctors successfully performed a groundbreaking hand transplant on a painter who lost both hands in a train accident. The 12-hour surgery, hailed as a miracle, involved meticulously connecting every blood vessel, muscle, tendon, and nerve between the donor's hands and the recipient's arms. The hands were generously donated by Meena Mehta, an administrative head of a reputed school in South Delhi, who had pledged her organs after her death. Her kidneys, liver, and corneas have already transformed the lives of three people, and now her hands have given hope to the painter. Isn't this amazing?
