I've been looking for the right word to describe this phenomenon but I've failed to find it - where a country may boast impressive economic growth figures on paper, have an impressive GDP, may even have nuclear technology, but almost all the economic wealth is concentrated in a few hands and outside a few pockets of modernity and opulence that may be found in the few rich areas of their major cities, just a few miles away from those few areas, the country is a literal cesspool of filth, poverty and backwardness. Pockets of opulence amidst an ocean of squalor. Is there one word that describes this very common scenario found in most third world countries? It's for this reason I struggle to view India as a rich country, and also why I'm not impressed about the flowery economic growth data thrown about regarding some African countries.
