@DJSnM It's hard to compete with a firm national will, large GDP, and a long term funding plan that won't be interrupted. Living under an authoritarian regime is a high price to pay but that's the reality.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the US's difficulty in funding collaborations with other countries leads to China achieving this before Europe & USA.
Daniel Fischer @[email protected]@cosmos4u

@DJSnM And which - faking surprise - China *is* doing as recently described in the paper spj.science.org/doi/10.34133/r… ("Recent Development of the Laser Interferometer for Taiji Space Gravitational Wave Detection") -> english.news.cn/20260509/b4fa9… ...

@penderbook @PlantPolyploidy @DJSnM I’ve heard that they’re so fragile now that if you touch them, they fall apart. The old ones cost millions of dollars and we’re good for maybe one or two wearings. The new ones will have to be good for multiple wearings.

@MarkJorda18460 @jeff_foust They’re not gonna orbit the moon even once. The spacecraft doesn’t have the power to go into orbit. They are just going around the moon.

@jeff_foust One would think with today’s such advanced technology we could send a fkn rocket to space just to have 4 astronauts orbit the moon a few times and come home.

@thejackbeyer And when the AI bubble bursts, because there not a single AI company or division is currently profitable or likely to be soon, we lose Mars because we lose SpaceX with it. 😒

@PiscitelliPhil @DJSnM Because NASA doesn’t get their own airplanes. They have to use hand me downs. They only have three. There’s no other airplane in the world that can do this. Develop a new airplane cost about $10 billion. And if you only need three of them, it would probably take 20 years.

@StigTheWhite @DJSnM For the same fucking reason we are still flying B-52s built in the early 1960s, and refueling aircraft built in the late 1950s. Because they do what they need to do and do it well and there is nothing to replace it with that can do the task as well as it can.

@StigTheWhite @DJSnM Much like the U-2, there's nothing else with its capabilities. The closest thing would be a Global Hawk, but they have less payload and a lower flight ceiling.

The Jerusalem Post has received multiple indications that the United States is considering an intervention in the ongoing protests across Iran, with Israel also checking to see if the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro will make action possible against the Iranian Regime.

@Luath9 @Erdayastronaut A lot of people figured then it would take 10 launches to get it right. So this isn’t much behind schedule. What nobody figured is that it would take years to get to that number. Most of that had to do with government regulation.

@Erdayastronaut EA, I like you, you're a good kid, but the excuses for Starship are starting to wear a little bit thin, failing in the early stages is understandable, not five years down the road. Something is rotten at Starbase.

This is the beauty of having a massive manufacturing capability! Losing a massive booster would be a year+ set back for just about every other program, but it's only a month set back for SpaceX.
SpaceX@SpaceX

The Starbase team plans to have the next Super Heavy booster stacked in December, which puts it on pace with the test schedule planned for the first Starship V3 vehicle and associated ground systems. Starship’s twelfth flight test remains targeted for the first quarter of 2026.

@VikingShelters @elonmusk @Starlink That would go way once starship gets underway. The bigger satellites have plenty times of capacity, but they can only be launched with starship. That’ll be six months from now.

@4paulryan @Marc_Kenyon @ElephantSignal They have customer support just not the kind that people want. Most people to have real issues have no trouble getting service. You just can’t talk to anybody on the telephone. But when most people dishes were broken, they were supposedly free of charge.
