Deep Daily (Sunday Edition) In 1965, my father’s brother, Marion, took his own life at age 27. Sixteen years later, I was born on December 28—his birthday. Though its proximity to Christmas often meant fewer celebrations with friends, my family treated my birthday with the reverence of a midsummer event, an unspoken tribute to Marion’s unfinished life. He left behind two young sons: Dale, now deceased, who was 6, and David, whom I still see, who was 5. His death created a void my grandparents rarely acknowledged, which distanced David and Dale from our family during my childhood. My father and grandparents occasionally brought the boys around, but their presence seemed to stir painful memories of loss and unspoken guilt for missing signs of Marion’s struggles. I knew Marion only through my father’s fleeting comments. “My brother was a good diver,” he’d say, offering no further details. I pieced together his existence from these sparse anecdotes—snapshot memories lacking the depth to make him fully human. Later, I realized it wasn’t what my father said but what he left unsaid that revealed the weight of his grief. My father, born five years after Marion, bore the scars of their complicated bond. Marion harbored a deep resentment toward my father for ending his status as an only child, sometimes expressing it through abuse. Family stories suggest Marion envied my father’s closeness with my grandmother, while my father longed for the bond Marion shared with my granddaddy. As someone who never experienced sibling abuse, I can only imagine how it shaped my father’s soul. My granddaddy struggled with alcoholism throughout his life, cycling through periods of sobriety and devastating binges. After Marion’s death, these episodes worsened. He’d disappear to rural hideouts, unfaithful to my grandmother, who kept his business afloat until he returned to his senses. His grief was so consuming that he missed his daughter’s wedding in 1969. My father once shared a vivid memory of returning from Army service in Germany for Marion’s funeral. His sisters clung to him, adjusting to the reality of him as their only brother. I wish I could have witnessed that moment—families reveal their strength in both the best and worst times. Trials like these expose the resilience of blood ties, but they also leave lasting shadows. A quiet sadness lingered in our family, like a dead limb on the family tree. Recently, I visited a website called “Faces of Suicide.” Its gallery of men and women, young and old, struck me deeply. Some faces bore visible pain, others unexpected joy. The beautiful women stood out most, challenging the myth that beauty shields one from despair. Like my uncle, each person made the heartbreaking choice to let go of a world they could no longer endure. None of them were losers, selfish, or weak—they were human, grappling with unbearable pain. It’s normal to wonder about your place in the world or what it would be like to never have existed. Do we truly matter? The answer is a resounding yes. You may not see it, but your presence inspires, influences, and uplifts others in ways you cannot imagine. If you’re struggling with serious suicidal thoughts, please reach out for help immediately. Step back from the edge and know that you are enough—your light and worth are infinite. Thank you for reading, and may we all choose kindness, always. In loving memory of James Marion Perry Jr. (1939–1965) —RP

@RochieWBZ @christianfauria I’m so sorry you and your daughter, along with the others, had to experience this. Once again, it is heartbreaking and all so unnecessary. 🥲

Been a tough week for our family. Had to say goodbye to our 14-1/2 year old friend Mason. Been with us thru HS/College, two weddings, vacations, holiday gatherings, ballgames and more. Was the best dog you could ever have! 😔RIP

@davidwade @CourtneyCWBZ choosing between the owl and Nibi the beaver is a Sophie’s Choice situation! 🥲 They are both adorable. Ironically, I watched this segment with my Nibi shirt on! ❤️🦉❤️🦫

MooMoo’s test results are in and it’s good news I’m happy to say! 😊 He is showing early signs of kidney change and slightly raised white blood cell count but nothing serious. So a course of antibiotics and another test in a month. As good as I could have hoped for really 😸.

MooMoo is up and about this morning, which is an improvement. He’s had some breakfast and looks a bit brighter I think. Thank you everyone, for your support and kind words, it means a lot to me. Although I haven’t been responding to your comments, be assured that I have read them all 😊. Hopefully things will get back to normal next week and I can get back to documenting the adventures of #orangejim and the crew 😸.

Back from the vets, with a bag of stuff for Moo. He’s had a blood test, results tomorrow. He’s got some pain killers and food supplements. He has eaten this evening, so that’s good. Thank you all for your support and good wishes 😽.

Good morning everyone! 😸. MooMoo seems happy and bright this morning! 😊, quite different from the last few days. He’s had his breakfast and is trying to steal mine 😸. I can only guess that the injection he had has worked. I will speak to the vet again later.

Moomoo is back from the vet. He has a broken tooth and his IBS has flared up again. He’s had some antibiotics and a course of steroids. I discussed dental treatment with the vet, but it carries a significant risk, at his age. It’s a hard decision, I’m going to sleep on it.

@PaulaEbben @AnnaMeiler @pennylikeacoin great turkey story. The driver was a riot! We get turkeys in our neighborhood all the time & I’ve met them at my mailbox and we just chat. 😂 I will continue to let them cross the road in their own good time. I’m such an animal lover!

Please stop what you are doing and hear me out. Tomorrow will be 8 years since Jaime was murdered the Parkland shooting. Our life over the past 8 years has been defined by moving forward from loss and also honoring Jaime and her voice. My wife Jennifer wrote a letter to Jaime, and while incredibly hard for her to do this, spoke it out in this video for you to hear. PLEASE LISTEN!!! Thank you to our friends and family for your support every day. We love you. Please follow the work that we do in Jaime's memory at orangeribbonsforjaime.org. Your support is greatly appreciated.
