More Than 17,000 Cambodians Displaced After Thai Military Opens Fire Along Border PHNOM PENH – As of 4 p.m. on December 8, a total of 17,693 people, representing 5,388 families, have been displaced after Thai military forces opened fire along the Cambodia–Thailand border. According to Soth Kimkolmony, spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management, 2,452 families, totaling 7,596 people, fled their homes in Oddar Meanchey. In Preah Vihear, 499 families (2,262 people) evacuated, while 1,003 families (4,012 people) fled in Banteay Meanchey, and 1,434 families (3,823 people) left their homes in Siem Reap.

Thai soldiers crossing into Cambodian territory were caught on security cameras in Banteay Meanchey this afternoon. Footage from the provincial administration shows Thai tanks and paramilitary units pushing past the barbed wire and entering Prey Chan village. Thousands of Cambodian families were moved out earlier in the day after heavy Thai shelling hit the area. Local officials say this is a clear breach of Cambodia’s territory and the agreements meant to keep the peace. Thailand’s First Army Region has since announced operations to claim what it calls “Thai sovereign territory” inside Banteay Meanchey, with reports that troops are preparing to move toward two more villages in O’Chrov district. Cambodian forces are now responding to protect civilians and defend the border.
