CO2 is a key byproduct of fertilizer production, which has been affected by rising natural gas prices. Breweries need CO2 for carbonating beer. The timing is particularly sensitive because it coincides with the World Cup, when demand for beer is high. This situation shows how a conflict in the Middle East can create unexpected ripple effects on everyday products in Europe, even items like beer. It adds to the growing list of concerns in the UK, including food price pressures and energy costs, all stemming from the current instability in the Gulf. The Iranian war fallout is hitting ordinary people in unexpected ways.

@WarMonitor3 Europe created its own vulnerability by refusing to produce more energy at home. Strong American action is trying to fix the mess Iran made. Europe should stop complaining and start drilling its own oil fast.

Yes, some Japanese officials sent peace feelers through the Soviet Union in June–July 1945. However, the Japanese government as a whole never offered unconditional surrender. Their military leaders still wanted to fight on, planning a final massive defense of the home islands that would have killed hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of Japanese civilians and soldiers, plus many more American troops. The peace feelers were vague, conditional, and went nowhere because Japan refused to accept defeat on Allied terms. The atomic bombs forced the Japanese Emperor to override the hardliners and surrender in days. Without the bombs, the war would likely have continued into late 1945 or 1946 with a bloody invasion of Japan.

@King_Wisdom__ @EthanLevins2 Historical evidence indicates that some elements within the Japanese govt had been seeking a way to end the war since early 1945, before the atomic bombings. Japan sent peace feelers via the Soviet Union in June–July 1945.

No, that is not accurate. The US dropped the atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945 for one main reason: to end the war quickly and save lives. Japan was not on the verge of surrender. Their leaders were preparing to fight to the death. American military planners expected up to one million more US casualties, and millions of Japanese deaths, if the war continued with a full invasion. The bombs forced Japan to surrender in days, avoiding a long and bloody invasion of the Japanese mainland. It was a terrible choice that killed many civilians, but it stopped a war that had already killed tens of millions. The idea that America dropped the bombs only to “show off to Russia” is a common myth. The main goal was to end the fighting fast and prevent even greater loss of life on both sides. America used its power to finish the deadliest war in history. That decision, while tragic, shortened the war and saved far more lives than it took. Blaming the US for wanting to look strong ignores the brutal reality of 1945. War is ugly. Sometimes hard choices are necessary to stop even worse outcomes.

@King_Wisdom__ @EthanLevins2 The US used these bombs only to show off to Russia. Killed tens of thousands of civilians to save civilians? I'm not buying that lie. Japan was already on the verge of surrender. But the US wanted to be seen by the world as a superpower who ended WWII, and not Russia.

That decision from 1945 was terrible and cost many innocent lives, but it forced Japan to surrender and stopped a war that would have killed millions more. Today, the world is dangerous for a different reason: The United States has nuclear weapons but has never used them aggressively since 1945 and has never threatened to wipe other countries off the map. Iran, on the other hand, is racing toward nuclear weapons while: funding terror groups that attack neighbors, threatening to destroy Israel, closing the Strait of Hormuz to punish the world with high fuel prices. That is the real danger right now.

@SelbagD @EthanLevins2 Many people call facts “propaganda” simply because they do not like Trump or strong American action. Supporting decisive US power that lowers energy prices for the world is not propaganda. It is common sense.

That view is dangerous and backwards. The United States used nuclear weapons in 1945 to end World War II and save millions of lives by forcing Japan to surrender. It was a terrible choice, but it stopped a longer war. Iran is a completely different case. The Iranian regime has spent decades calling for the destruction of Israel, funding terror groups, and threatening to wipe countries off the map. Giving a nuclear weapon to a regime that sponsors terrorism and attacks its neighbors is far riskier than trusting a democratic country that has never used a nuke in aggression since 1945. The idea that Iran is 100 times more trustworthy than the US or Israel ignores basic facts and history. A world without any nuclear weapons would be ideal, but until that day comes, responsible powers must stop dangerous regimes like Iran from getting them.

@King_Wisdom__ @EthanLevins2 I trust Iran 100 times more than Israel or the US to have a nuke weapon. It was not Iran who bombed Hiroshima & Nagasaki, and killed thousands of civilians. But I prefer the whole world to disarm.

VP Vance snaps back at Pope Leo’s latest comments against the U.S. war in Iran, pointing to World War II and asking whether God was with American forces who defeated the Nazis and liberated concentration camps. “How can you say God is never on the side of those who wield the sword?”

In World War II, American forces used the sword to defeat the Nazis and liberate concentration camps. That was clearly on the side of good. Not every use of military power is evil. Sometimes strength is necessary to stop greater evil. Iran was racing toward nuclear weapons and closed the Strait of Hormuz to blackmail the world with high fuel prices. America is using force to stop that threat and reopen the vital oil route.
