This shouldn't be surprising. The question becomes "Is D&D a broad category of fantasy roleplaying or is it a specific game outlined by Gygax?" I favor the narrow definition because I don't think it's an insult to say that a game is not D&D. Castles and Crusades, Shadowdark, Tunnels and Trolls, and Hordewars are not D&D, but they're respectable games of the genre.
Mike Mearls@mikemearls

I can 100% vouch for the results of this survey. When I worked on D&D, we saw this in every study we did of the general population. People who claimed they played D&D described a game that looked nothing like what was in the rulebooks. troypress.com/dd-rules-accor…

@SaffronOlive This is such an obvious take its crazy that people are arguing Magic is so massive that they should be the premiere competitive card game in the entire world and Commander a premiere kitchen table format

Wizards needs to view organized play as a long term investment in the game. Yes, Commander is king at the moment, but who knows what the game will look like in 5 or 10 years? Who would have predicted Commander's rise 15 years ago? More support for 1v1 competitive play seems like a great hedge against an unknown future.

@KaiKai2492 This mindset should be applied in a different manner entirely "Our game has fishing and fighting You choose how you engage with our game" This is the correct way to use this, in my opinion

This argument has done irreparable damage to video game discussion on here. Games are built around mechanics, no mechanic exists entirely in a vacuum because they're designed to work off of each other and with the rest of the game in mind. This is why a lot of people don't understand why Halo players don't like sprint, it's not just "then don't use sprint" because now maps are larger for no reason to accommodate the faster movement and ADS speed is an added factor to the gameplay making it more of a twitch shooter. "The side quests are bad" - "You control the quests you do" "This weapon feels really weightless" - "You control the weapons you use" This mindset and any variation of it can be used to just justify any bad game design.

Even if the White House released a public statement tomorrow saying aliens exist and they have proof, it would not challenge the Christian faith at all. Two possibilities. 1 - They are demons in disguise. 2 - They were also created by God. I lean towards the second one because I think it makes sense that God created an entire universe and then he would populate it. Why so much space and celestial bodies just to populate a single planet? What do you think?

I dated a man once, and because I called him at 1 AM and he picked up right away, I was like, “Could you please come over?” I wanted to be close with him, and we had been dating for a while, so we had already crossed that point. He was like, “I’m so tired. I’ll come first thing in the morning, I promise.” And in my mind, I was like, a husband of mine would never turn me down because I need my man to be ready anytime, any place, at any moment. So I broke up with him because that felt cruel to me. I’m waiting on someone to get this post correct. I’m waiting for somebody to decipher this post

I think that last part is the worst. Like, there's the section of the DMG that's talking about what armor looks like (and most people know this), and then randomly, there's this line under Helmets that says if you don't wear one, there's a 1-in-6 (or 2-in-6) chance a monster strikes your bare head. Just a random rule at the end of a section that's otherwise not worth reading unless you know nothing at all about armor.
Nobleshield@Nobleshield

@DanielDnDYT True but High Gygaxian is part of the "charm" of 1e even if it makes it hard to actually get wtf he's saying or having to hunt through a section for a rule that's a sentence buried in several paragraphs of context

Since the topic came up, I absolutely ask players to roll even when they can't pass. Here's why: 1. I go with RAW on this, which is nat 20 is not an auto-success 2. I don't have their stats memorized. What's impossible for one character may be possible for another 3. They may have some ability or item that can still turn their roll into a success. I don't remember everything they've picked up, that's their responsibility to keep track of, not mine

The ppl signaling their virtue by insisting the correct answer is blue, and only evil ppl would pick red dont really understand the question. It isnt a question about your OWN morality, but instead is a question of your perception of everyone else's morality. And it isnt even a measure of their "morality" but is actually a measure of their survival instincts. Betting against the survival instincts of 50% of the human species is a bad choice. Anyone who is facing this choice for real and had to think about it for more than 5 minutes would pick red, and more importantly, would council everyone they care about to pick red. Would you want your children to risk their life on 50% of the human species to bet against their own guaranteed survival? No decent parent would.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@WhickTv @radicallymid The chances of 80% pushing Red is higher than 51% pushing Blue. A small percentage of Blue pushers dying is a preferable outcome to risking 49% of Blue pushers dying. The average person always votes in their self-interest

I'm a blue button pusher. Reasons in no necessary order: 1) Many people I love and care for will press blue. Me pressing blue has a chance of saving them, me pressing red does not 2) I would feel bad if I contributed, in however small a way, to the direct death of a non-zero number of people 3) I believe most people will, when it comes down to it, push blue. Pushing blue has the greatest chance of *everyone* surviving.

@Aella_Girl What would actually happen is that blue people would go into the voting booth and go "if everyone else is voting blue, i can vote red and be safe" Then 49% of people end up voting Blue ending up with massive death. Its way easier to convince people to be selfish than to gamble

@questionableway If this question was presented to the world, and everyone understood it fully, everyone would click Red.. If everyone clicks the same color, everyone is saved regardless. By clicking Red, you bet on the selfishness of others - which is probably a good bet.

A woman once said her marriage was perfect for five years. No fights, no issues, everyone admired them. Then she got a well-paying job, nothing changed at home, except her. She started asking questions. Saying “I don’t like this.” Having opinions she never voiced before. That’s when the “problems” in the marriage began. Her husband said, “You’ve changed”, and she replied, “No. I’m just no longer the woman who was afraid to lose you.” And that’s what self-awareness and emotional growth can look like in a relationship.

@BanjoAtheist The fact that Christianity wont do away with Hell is a bigger indication that Christainity is true. If Christianity were a false religion, it would be logical to get rid of "the bad things" Also, more importantly, its arrogant to assume we have any account of "perfect justice"

I don’t care whether he existed or not; my point is what’s actually attributed to him doesn’t match how the real world works. You’ve got stories of healing blindness with mud and spit. In real life, blindness is a medical condition with causes like nerve damage or eye defects, you don’t fix that with dirt and saliva. You’ve got claims that people can handle snakes or survive poison if they believe enough. But venom doesn’t care about belief, biology reacts the same way every time. Then there’s the idea that if your eye makes you sin, you should cut it out. But human behavior doesn’t come from body parts like that. You don’t solve desire or thoughts by removing an organ. Mental illness and sickness were often blamed on demons, but now we know epilepsy is brain activity, infections come from microbes, and disorders have neurological causes, not spirits. And then the big miracle claims: walking on water, stopping storms instantly, raising dead people. These don’t match physics or biology. Water doesn’t support human weight, storms don’t pause on command, and death after certain biological limits isn’t reversible. So the pattern is simple: it reflects an ancient understanding of how nature works, not modern science. And when you compare it to what we actually know today, it doesn’t hold up as literal reality. Jesus's story shows that Bible writers didn't know shit about science.

@JamesSurowiecki The flaw with your thinking is you believe democracy is the goal. Of course arguments are going to fall short if you're looking for democratic justifications. The point of the electoral college is deliberately to avoid a direct democracy because direct democracies are bad.

The replies to this are so funny: 4000 people making the exact same bad arguments I've heard my whole life, as if they've somehow never been made before. I know the arguments for the EC - that's why I said there are no good ones. The US has only one office that's elected by American voters as a whole. The fact that we have a system that in that one race allows a minority of voters to dictate to the majority and decide who gets the office is ridiculous and stupidly anti-democratic. We're always going to have it, but that's a bad thing.

Atheism is the understanding that self-contradictory entities cannot exist There is no such thing as a "square circle" There is no such thing as consciousness without a brain A being cannot be both all-powerful and all-knowing, since these properties contradict each other Etc
Steve McRae 😈A-Holy Pope of Agnosticism😇🇺🇸@SteveMcRae_

I guess I am needed again to explain to people that atheism is in fact a belief. I will take on any challengers who think they have the knowledge and skill level to prove me wrong with substantive evidence and logic. Good luck with that! Atheism: The belief there is no God.

The Pope is infallible in times when he speaks ex cathedra. Which has only happened a couple times in all of Catholic history. That’s how it works but thank you for playing. You should learn more about your faith before speaking authoritatively. Ignorance is bliss but isn’t a good look when you don’t know what you’re talking about publicly.
