@Doug_Lemov @drakmog I came here to say exactly the same thing. Nuanced implementation and responsive teaching takes time. Teachers get there, but not in their first or second year of teaching phonics. I’d rather the risk of ‘over’ than ‘under’ while teachers build their knowledge. Then we nuance.

I agree with all of the points Loewus makes here. But let’s also not lose site of the fact that it is a huge victory to be talking about implementation nuance on the effective teaching of phonics where for decades there was none at all. Just mentioning that bc a backlash co-opted by the usual suspects & centering on the message—“there’s too much teaching of phonics”—would be a really bad outcome.

@kportermagee @rpondiscio Kathleen what you wrote in 2012 reflects so much of what I have seen as a school leader - replication hasn’t worked. What would you write differently now?

@teacherhead Tom this step, often overlooked, is so true in my experience. Someone needs to be able to see/dream/think about what comes next, long term. Visiting schools, connecting with others, reading, listening, revisiting past books/papers - beyond the demands of the present. It’s key.

2. You need a source of ideas.. some schools and teams within them are not switched into a flow of thinking about learning - or only feed on it second hand. Sharing ideas is vital —but obviously books, blogs, conferences, one-pagers etc .. don’t change things in themselves.

@themetresgained Thanks for the shout out Trisha! Couldn’t agree more re regional disadvantage. It kind of gets lost because it’s nowhere near as significant as our remote friends but it’s a massive issue. Access to PD, fewer opportunities, isolation …regions need attention.

What happens in different schools varies a lot. Agree - too many children being left behind and still children leaving primary school unable to read well.

Here, our dyslexic students are not getting much but the prevention model is improved significantly. The same can be said for U.S. The scores show they are being left behind.

We’ve used resources and completed PD with our local organisation @SPELDVic and Lyn Stone, plus have a strong reading intervention program. One interview can’t cover everything!
