Former BYU Basketball coach Steve Cleveland joined @espnthefan to react to the possibility of the Utah Jazz drafting AJ Dybantsa: Q: Is there a world where Danny Ainge trades future assets for AJ? You’ve been around that Ainge family. Danny is strategic in how he builds his front office. Could he move all those picks to get AJ? Steve Cleveland: Yeah, he has been very strategic. They’ve been great about acquiring draft picks. How that plays out, I don’t know. Obviously you’d love to have that number one pick that guarantees AJ—he’d be in Utah, in a Jazz uniform, and all the things that come with that. But easier said than done. I do know this: Austin and Danny have been amazing. Austin’s been in the business a long time, and Danny obviously has had a huge impact on the program. I think this is a great opportunity for them to put something together where they could get someone like AJ. It may not turn out that way—we don’t know what trades happen—but in a perfect world, I’d love to see them get that top pick or find a way to get AJ. I just can’t imagine the Ainge family not wanting AJ in a Jazz uniform. I haven’t had recent conversations with them, but I know how they operate. At the end of the day, that’s where I’d love to see it end up. That’s what most Jazz fans want too. Q: Let’s say it does work out—whether they trade up, get the number one pick, and AJ goes to Utah—or even if they stay at two and take Peterson. What do you think AJ’s impact would be in the first couple of years? He’s got to be a day-one starter, right? Steve Cleveland: Yes, absolutely a day-one starter. We’ve all watched him. I’ve watched him, watched practices, talked to coaches. This is the moment. Let’s capture this moment. Let’s put ourselves in position. I realize the Wizards have the pick, but I just can’t imagine not figuring out a way to get AJ in a Jazz uniform. I’m just going to think that way. That’s my mindset. I’ll look at the statistics, but at the end of the day, that’s what has to happen. It just has to happen. That makes everything better. Excellent look at any potential trade between the Jazz and Wizards. Very sound and fair points. Again, recent history shows that some of these trade suggestions out there are not in line with moves involving top-5 picks. And the Jazz will not be moving Ace Bailey in any trade up.
