The Indiana Fever entered this season with top-three expectations. And speaking of the number three, many believe they currently roster three top-10 caliber players. Ever since last year, the conversation around this team has centered on championship-or-bust expectations. But does this start to the season suggest the Fever may have been a bit overrated? Indiana has opened the year at (2-2) with what many would consider a favorable early schedule. Yes, it’s only four games, and it’s far too early to draw definitive conclusions, but through this opening stretch, the Fever haven’t looked like a true top 3–5 team. They opened the season with a home loss to a Dallas team that finished with the league’s worst record last year, though to be fair, that roster has clearly improved. They followed that with a single-digit win over a struggling Los Angeles team. Then came a home loss to Washington, the league’s youngest team, before an 11-point win over Seattle—a Storm squad missing three key players. Indiana believes its offense is good enough to compete, and through this opening stretch, generating more shot attempts than opponents has helped keep them in games. But what happens when they’re no longer winning the possession battle against the league’s elite? If those extra opportunities disappear, does the current level of defense hold up enough to compensate? Outside of the Seattle game, that end of the floor hasn’t looked particularly convincing. Again, it’s early, and four games is a small sample size. But this upcoming stretch should tell us a lot more about who this team really is. Indiana is set to face a Golden State team they lost to three times last season in back-to-back matchups, followed by games against Atlanta, New York, another meeting with Washington, and a Chicago Sky team that appears to have done a complete 180.
