super embarrassed to say I’m just two days sober after getting over two years of continuous sobriety but if it was any other alcoholic I’d be cheering for them so—go me. I truly am rooting for everyone trying to start anew this year, for any amount of time. alcoholic or not.

Prime Minister Carney has announced new supports to protect and strengthen Canada's Forest Sector, which include measures that examine competitiveness and encourage the use of domestic products. We welcome these measures for our industry that supports over 30,000 jobs here in Alberta. These jobs provide stable incomes and economic benefits that flow through communities. However, a deal on lumber with the United States is required. The current uncertainty is making homes unaffordable for Americans and impacting people on both sides of the border who work in transportation, retailing, and building with Canadian lumber. Day 2️⃣ highlights on our trade mission in 🇰🇷 South Korea below ⬇️⬇️ This was a jam-packed day, which included site visits and meetings with 4 major players in Korea’s wood-frame housing market, including Younglim Timber, XiGEIST, Dujon Housing, and Yunsung Housing. A sincere thank you to each of those partners for hosting our delegation! Younglim Timber is one of Korea’s most established wood product companies and is the largest Canadian wood importer in the country. We were proud to see so many A.F.P.A. stamps around! The tour with XiGEIST provided a really illuminating look into the way that prefabricated wooden housing solutions are serving the growing Korean market. The units were very impressive and featured a lot of Canadian lumber! Dujon Housing—a leading company in the domestic housing industry—shared with delegates about their wood-frame construction business and model homes. The showrooms were exceptional and clearly demonstrated the way that both energy efficiency and building quality are driving local market trends. We are proud to know that Alberta forest products can deliver. The day concluded with a tour of Songsan Green City, led by Yunsung Housing. As South Korea looks to decentralize Seoul, developers will be looking to build more neighbourhoods like Songsan Green City. Wood-frame construction and prefabrication can play an important role in advancing energy-efficient and high-quality housing within large-scale developments. Canadian S-P-F can play a key part in that story.

Day 1️⃣ in South Korea 🇰🇷 highlights ⬇️⬇️ Our time in South Korea kicked off with a strategy session, MOU signing, and a stakeholder reception at the Canadian Embassy in #Seoul. #SouthKorea is the 12th largest economy in the world and one that we would view as an emerging market for Canadian #lumber. Since the @canadawoodgroup office opened in South Korea in 2006, 2x4 wood-frame construction has grown from under 1% to over 17% of new housing starts, driven by sustained technical and market development. As the country looks to decentralize Seoul by developing more regional hubs, dive into off-site #construction with higher energy efficiency standards, and strive towards their #netzero goals, it’s clear that Canadian lumber can play a key role in meeting this growing demand. The Canada Wood MOU signing with the Korea Land and Housing Research Institute (LHRI) is a key step in supporting advanced #wood use in Korea. As a market leader—and the largest housing builder in the country—LHRI is well positioned to significantly influence expanded wood #building systems in Korea. The evening closed with a stakeholder reception hosted by H.E. Philippe LaFortune, Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Korea, with remarks from Alberta’s Minister of Forestry & Parks, @dtloewen. The exchanges, connections, and relationships shared during these events are invaluable. We want Korean stakeholders to know that Canadian (and Albertan) lumber is ready to meet their needs. We have the fibre, the #sustainability rigour, and the right product #innovations to meet their needs—quality product with no surprises.

Day 3️⃣ Japan recap 🇯🇵 ⬇️⬇️ The delegation met and toured the Senzoku Ike 5-storey mid-rise wooden condominium project in the morning. 5-6 storey mid-rise construction is an emerging market segment in Japan, and one of the strategic areas of accelerated market diversification being advanced in this market. Mitsui Home (a long-standing partner of Canada Wood) shared some of the building code challenges and opportunities for this type of construction. Mitsui Home then toured the group through the nearly completed Oshiage wooden hotel project. The hotel and accommodation space represents a huge opportunity for wood construction as Japan’s tourism industry continues to accelerate. The day concluded at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, where our friends at @canadawoodgroup hosted a Canada-Japan Wood Forum with over 200 leaders in Japan’s wood, housing, and construction sectors in attendance. There were some fantastic presentations providing insights on global market dynamics and supply outlooks, including a presentation from @CanforCorp's Kevin Pankratz and a CEO panel including Susan Yurkovich (Canfor) and Sean McLaren (West Fraser). The forum closed with a plaque ceremony honouring some of the long-standing partners who have been instrumental in growing the role of Canadian wood in Japan. The day concluded with a reception at the embassy that brought everyone together for a celebration of the great relationships built over the decades-long partnership between our nations and strengthened during our time together this week.

Day 2️⃣ highlights from our forestry trade mission in Japan ⬇️⬇️ We were thrilled to spend the day in Shizuoka learning about the Omaezaki Biomass Power Station. A big thank you to our friends at the Wood Pellet Association of Canada for arranging this special site visit! 🤩 The Omaezaki Biomass Power Plant opened in January of this year and uses #biomass as fuel to generate electricity that can be supplied reliably and continuously, providing clean energy for Japan’s grid. 🍃🔋 The plant is fuelled by a combination of wood pellets from Canada and Europe, and palm kernel shells from Southeast Asia. Almost 54,000 tonnes of the wood pellets used by this facility are produced in Alberta from our friends at @DraxGroupCanada. 🪵 Our hosts at the Omaezaki plant shared that Canadian wood pellets burn much better than other biomass alternatives and are in high demand in Japan. The Omaezaki Power Station has a generation capacity of 75 megawatts and produces approximately 530 million kilowatt-hours of electricity⚡️ per year, equivalent to the annual power consumption of about 170,000 households. 🏡🔋

Day 1️⃣ of our forestry trade mission to Japan highlights ⬇️⬇️⬇️ The morning opened with a Japan market strategy session hosted by the Canadian Embassy's Economics Minister, Louis-Pierre Émond, and our friends at @CanadaWood. Japan is one of our most important bilateral trading partners and is our largest offshore market. Canadian #lumber plays an important role in the housing market here, especially as Japan moves towards net-zero housing options. Canadian wood helps them achieve: ✅ energy-efficient builds ✅ homes that store carbon ✅ better insulation ✅ seismic resilience Following the market strategy session, our Forestry Minister, the Honourable @dtloewen, joined by B.C.’s Minister Ravi Parmar, met with delegates from the Japan 2x4 Home Building Association and Canada Wood to witness the signing of an MOU that confirms the joint technical and promotion collaboration between the Association and Canada Wood to expand the Japanese market for wooden mid-rise #construction. We were pleased to host delegates from the 2x4 Home Building Association in Alberta last month and see this MOU signing as a key milestone in our joint effort to grow this long-standing partnership. In the afternoon, the delegation met with Mitsubishi Estate Wood Building Co. Ltd. panel plant in Chiba. It was a great opportunity to learn more about some of their exciting projects firsthand, like the new 15,000-square-metre Kyushu dormitory, which is now Japan’s largest 2x4 midrise!! The group was also able to see Canada Wood Japan’s high-capacity shear wall system in action, seeing how it meets Japan’s rigorous seismic standards and enables taller, more complex wood structures. What were we most excited about? The high volume of #AlbertaWood we found on site! 🤩 The day concluded with a Wood Pellet Customer Appreciation dinner. Japan is emerging as the fastest-growing export market in the world for wood pellets, which are used by power utilities to create electricity, either by co-firing with coal or in dedicated #biomass power plants. Wood pellets in Alberta are made from residuals from the manufacturing process, and studies in Japan show that utilizing biomass to create power can achieve up to a 93% reduction in GHG emissions! Key themes from today? From new construction to energy demands, Japan is looking for high-quality and sustainable options to meet their needs. The good news? Alberta’s forest products can deliver.

Last week, Natural Resources Canada released the Jasper Wildfire Complex 2024 report, which documents the wildfire and the factors that influenced it. The report concludes that there is an ever-increasing hazard related to more than a century of fire suppression, resulting in a dense forest structure that is increasingly vulnerable to wildfire. The findings illustrate the ongoing need to build wildfire resilience. One key way we can do this is by reducing fuel loads - the total amount of flammable material in a forest - through active forest management. By using these proactive, science-based interventions, we can better protect our forests and communities from wildfire.
