new trick - ask Fable a hard task - let it think for 20 min - when it is about to answer, abort - copy/paste its thinking traces into a new prompt - ask: "while reasoning about this, did you face challenges or hit walls that would be greatly simplified by design-level changes?"

As an undergraduate in a research lab, this is already abundantly clear. You can simply do more. I think the future will move towards all academics seeing a vast amount of opportunity emerging just from being literate in AI and knowing how to do the engineering as well.

@alex_peys They can get good at these games with enough sft/rl but how do we get this result without training it for 100,000 rollouts on the task? This something I’ve been trying to solve and get an answer towards for the past 3 months or so

@alex_peys This is a similar thought I’ve had with ARC-AGI 3. The models know more about gaming than any human, but humans can zero shot the game while AI runs $10,000 in API costs just to get 2% (opus recently got 30%). Chess and Arc both have the same root you talked about

i think chess is still an interesting task to study for llms. all of the commercial llms suck at chess despite having probably every chess book / game in their pre-training set. all of the raw material to be good at chess is in there. if we sft'd/rl'd them directly on chess, they would obviously become much better than any human. in fact you can get really small networks to be extremely high level with half a day of work. so... is there any way to extract chess capabilities without the brute force of task specific verified rewards and/or behavior cloning?

@emollick Have you read Scythe by Neal Shusterman? If not I do recommend it! I can’t help but think about it nearly daily since it depicts a dystopian novel that has a god-like singularity that has become the benevolent steward of earth. The way the singularity works is sometimes uncanny.

I have read a lot of science fiction and nobody really anticipated AIs in the way we have them. I mean, you can project ahead to Culture Minds or Golem XIV etc., but the current & immediate future, where statistical models of language do the things that they do, seems unexpected

Certain eastern asians like Japanese are also facing a crisis. I think they should stop shelving the cures for cancer regardless- but if that cure was "cause an entire animal to go extinct" itd be different. Why doesnt scarcity hold any relevance with human life? We have a bigger impact on the environment than any other animal

There is no need for population control, you should avoid encouraging the death of children from contracting malaria.

@Lorentzano @bryan_johnson In this case, people trolling are part of the data collection process. You can see it in the breakdown pretty clearly. People recommending him to eat meat are not automatically categorized as trolling either, which I’m sure you can think about as to why.
