I saw the film adaptation of @MichaelCrummey 's Sweetland over the weekend. It was incredible. Most faithful adaptation I've seen since The Road--and actually has a similar vibe.

@kerriclaireneil If you can add some kind of freedom of expression into the mix it helps. If the encampment is part of a protest, and the encampment itself is integral to the political message, it adds a little more protection.

@JonnyLomond @kerriclaireneil Not recorded on the docket--you'd have to be in court to see. Legal Aid is a public body and ATIPP-able. They would have a running list of how many people are in the queue and how many appearances they have before a decision is made. They do good work with the resources they have

I guess I've seen too many American law shows but I always assumed if you were charged with a crime and low income you would be assigned a lawyer... But that's not true in NL??? You have to apply for legal aid which is a pretty big barrier if you're very poor and have no support

@JonnyLomond @kerriclaireneil Very low. You nearly have to be unwaged. The need to make an application to legal aid causes delays as well. A good portion of the individuals in plea court on any given day are rescheduling their appearances pending making/hearing back from application

Rick encouraged me to run in my first campaign 18 years ago. I asked him who was running in Topsail so I could vote for the NDP in my first election. He answered my question with another question: "You?" What a guy.
