And yet, in this embrace, it is difficult to say who is comforting the other.

It simply restores a little faith in humanity. Just a little. And that's already immense…

The sheep built Britain.
Not metaphorically. Materially.
The wool trade was England's dominant industry from the 12th to the 16th century. Wool funded the Plantagenet wars. Wool paid for the Crusades. Wool built the merchant class that eventually built Parliament into the institution that could challenge the Crown.
Edward III, who placed the Woolsack in the House of Lords in the 14th century, understood that the sheep was the economy. He didn't need an economist to tell him. He needed to tell the Lord Chancellor, every time he sat down, what England was built on.
The Lord Chancellor is still sitting on it.
But the story of what the sheep actually built goes further than finance.
The monasteries of medieval England were the country's largest wool producers. Fountains Abbey. Rievaulx. Tintern. Hundreds of houses running thousands of acres of sheep pasture, selling wool to Italian and Flemish merchants through the Staple.
The monasteries used the income to build.
The buildings they built are still standing.
Britain's stone architecture, its landscape character, its legal and commercial institutions, its parliamentary traditions: all of it downstream, in some part, of the wool clip.
The sheep didn't just feed Britain.
The sheep financed it.
Every great building, every cathedral close, every wool town with its church that dwarfs the houses around it: the sheep was there first.
The sheep paid for it.
Show some respect.

Some day in the future, someone (perhaps a grandchild?) will come across a hard drive with hundreds of photos of me & a dog at Sunrise. Thousands.
Perhaps they’ll look at them?

@NewForestDog My sister rescued two cats and took them to my mother's house (mother is 85) with the commitment to continue to care for them should they outlive my mother. My mother is thrilled.

This gives me the feels. I have not been able to commit to another dog since Newfy died, because Mr HI has complex health issues. I have resigned myself to doglessness while we are together. But he is 17 years older than me, so I am likely to survive him. Never say never.

My Mum is 89. A few weeks before Christmas, her elderly dog died, and she was heartbroken. She’d decided not to get another dog because she didn’t think it would be fair to a dog, as she is disabled and doesn’t think she’ll live long enough to outlive it. However, a dog rescuer who had rehomed dogs with her in the past knew her old dog had died, and when a little 12-year-old dog came in whose elderly owner had died, she phoned Mum and asked if she’d be interested. By then, she was feeling very lonely without a constant companion, so she said she’d give it a go and see how it went. As you can see by the photo, they got on very well and are blissfully happy. Both of them have got a new lease of life and adore each other. Credit to the respective owner ✍️

But the word 'wassail' goes back to the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'wes hal', 'be well!', which became a medieval drinking toast. (The reply was 'drinkhail!')
