Why is Pradeep Gupta not releasing his Bengal exit poll data? There are only four possible scenarios. Let’s break them down: Scenario 1: BJP is getting a clear majority If this were true in Gupta’s poll, there’s almost no chance he would hold back the numbers. Releasing such a prediction would make BJP happy, and if TMC were actually losing Bengal, there would be little reason for him to fear any backlash from them afterward. So this scenario looks unlikely. Scenario 2: TMC is getting a clear majority If his data shows a strong TMC win, releasing it would hurt BJP’s morale and create negative political messaging at a time when Modi and Shah would not want that. In this case, withholding the numbers makes strategic sense. Scenario 3: BJP is winning, but he is being pressured to show TMC winning This is highly unlikely. Gupta has generally been seen as someone whose projections tend to favor BJP, not hurt it. It’s hard to imagine him releasing numbers that go directly against BJP if his actual data shows them winning. This scenario can be ruled out. Scenario 4: TMC is winning, but he is being pushed to show BJP winning This is the most plausible explanation. If his real data shows TMC ahead, but he is expected to project a BJP win, he faces a problem: If he releases pro-BJP numbers and they turn out wrong, his agency’s credibility takes another hit. He has already faced criticism in the past for inaccurate projections. So the safest option is exactly what he has done: don’t release the data at all. According to you, which scenario is correct?
