I’m making it a goal to submit poetry for publication over the coming year. Anyone have good suggestions of publications that may be interested in Christian/Catholic sonnets?

I hear we're talking about converts. I have thoughts, but what struck me today (while walking all over the grounds of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe) was that Juan Diego was a fairly recent convert, he was absolutely earnest in his love of the Lord, and Mary chose him.

@LucastaHonoria I can submit a “claim” to my vision insurance using the Warby Parker receipt and they reimburse me a certain amount. May be worth looking into!

@franzsherbert It’s been one of my favorites since high school! I think part of that secret is that it’s got a little bit of everything: humor, romance, music, tragedy, peril, Bogart.

Rewatched Casablanca for the first time since college, I remember liking it but not nearly as much as I did this time. It's crazy that one of the most overexposed and ubiquitous films ever made still feels so urgent and vital and moving

Talking this morning about panic-buying some dry goods, and @LizEHansen called me “bean dad”. I told her “you can’t call me that in public — that guy got super-canceled!”

I haven't seen the film yet, but I've read the book, and I found it be intensely political. It portrays centralized political authority as a necessity, is strongly pro-science research and education, and the protagonist chooses to forfeit his life to save the lives of foreigners.
Gretchen Ronnevik@garonnevik

I know I'm late to the party, but FYI "Project Hail Mary" is a really fun movie. We took our 9, 13, and 15 yo, and loved it. Not a remake, not a franchise, no political agendas, no sex scenes, no swearing I can remember. Some intensity. It was just a good story.

@MmePapyraceus Yeah the initial dig on his clothes is rude, and I think their outfits look nice. But based on this post alone, he doesn’t seem very normal about other people’s clothes either… might be an example of a toxic cycle.

I feel like you have to write this book before you repeatedly demonstrate in the most public way imaginable that you are somehow the least principled, most power-obsessed person in US politics. On the other hand a lot of people will forget about that and lap up this slop anyway
JD Vance@JDVance

I’ve been writing this book for a long time, and I’m honored to finally be able to share the full story with you all. Communion is about my personal journey and how I found my way back to faith. It will be available in June, but you can pre-order today: a.co/d/0cTpceI7

A lot of that is Trump himself and the cretins she elevates to power, and I genuinely hope when he’s gone the temperature starts to come down. But people on the fringe-right have been talking about “turning the desert to glass” since I was old enough to engage in politics.

@Builtahouse That’s an interesting idea that I’ll have to keep in mind next time I rewatch. I didn’t interpret it as “all magic and science is fake”, but rather that they found the only real magic IN science, but didn’t think of anything better to do with it than a bigger trick.

@LCTMH on successive watches, I can certainly see that message (and it does illustrate how little ambition matters next to tangible relationships!!) I just think the idea of turning ALL "magic" (& science, too!) into a fake/harmful game of charades is sooo nihilistic.

@Builtahouse I would typically say Prestige is my favorite Nolan (tho not my favorite director). It’s been a few years since I’ve watched it, but I think there’s a through line here of “what if life is fake and love is all that matters”.

the prestige is the most beautifully made, philosophically repugnant movie to me (next to the dark knight) all "what if anything magical in life was a lie, perhaps worth dying for" but it's so cool he's grown out of it
