@amywelborn2 @DHiddenness 💀 I remember one childhood parish, as late as the mid-90s, where the pastor had us take off our shoes and come to communion in socks/barefeet to remember we were on holy ground.

@DHiddenness I am about to bust out with a thread/post of "things they made us do" - the historical memory is so short. Starting with the trend of having everyone in the congregation wear a nametag so the Eucharistic minister could say, "BOB, the Body of Christ!"

And there's the era in which in some places, they replaced foot-washing completely with the members of the congregation washing each other's hands. Which always struck me as curious, not only because it obliterates the symbolism of the foot-washing completely, but because of the not-great symbolism of washing one's hands during the Triduum, of all times. TL:DR - Pilate.

Once again, I have to wonder if Catholic Xitter has been living under a rock. I've been at Maundy Thursday at Catholic Churches for over 30 years in several different parishes in a few dioceses in the US. That's my sample size. Except for the years I was able to avoid the Novus Ordo entirely, this is what it has *always* been. First the priest washed the feet of twelve people. Sometimes women. Then he retired to his celebrant's chair, and other people took over the washing and being washed. At first it is people who have been nominated, but soon it shifts to a voluntary basis. Sometimes children get involved. It goes on for some time. My impression is that enthusiasm for this on the ground level waned under Benedict but came back under Francis. I think the reason Catholic Xitter is so surprised by such things is that being on Catholic Xitter is a filter and the people who end up in each other's feeds are above-average knowledge and interest, indicting they aren't at average parishes. This leads to the strange situation that as much as people complain about our the state of Catholicism on here, when they are confronted with average perish reality it is *much worse than they expected*. To the point that they think average parish behavior is worthy of an apostolic visitation. People. No. This is what typical Catholicism is. This is what happened Thursday night at my neighborhood parish. That's why I was somewhere else.

I hear we're talking about converts. I have thoughts, but what struck me today (while walking all over the grounds of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe) was that Juan Diego was a fairly recent convert, he was absolutely earnest in his love of the Lord, and Mary chose him.

*Child crying* “Tom hit me in the face with the mop!” “WHY DID YOU HIT HIM WITH THE MOP?!” T2: “He told me to, so I did.” “You told your brother to hit you in the face with the mop?” “Yeah.” “And now you’re upset he hit you?” “Yes.”

@JLLiedl Is the age bracket roughly the same? Also, I don't disagree with b) but you've also got the likelihood that the new converts haven't had the chance to experience scandal within the Church yet.

High numbers of adult converts seem to be coinciding with scores of (young) Catholics leaving the Church. This suggests a) the sacramental encounter w/ Christ via the Church is still compelling in our day b) & we have not figured out how to effectively communicate this to our own

Priests, please don’t do this. Palm Sunday Mass is long and challenging with young kids in the best of circumstances. The priest today came over before Mass and made a point of telling me that today is “very somber” and I needed to make my kids “behave.” 🙃

Men! I am telling you this right now: if you go on a dinner date with a lady, you should greet her by saying "you look nice." Ideally you give a little up-down look before you pay the compliment, and you say it while looking into her eyes.

If someone gave you a $100k gift card to Costco how would you spend it? Three stipulations: have to spend it on you (or immediate family), have to spend it in one year, and you can't resell the stuff you buy. What are you buying?
