The World Cup doesn’t just fill stadiums. It fills networks.
We’re a few days late with this post. We had planned to mark 100 days until this year’s World Cup, which was actually on Wednesday.
While our countdown might be late, networks shouldn’t be late preparing for the traffic surge major sporting events can bring.
Check out this clip from LINX102 in 2018, where LINX member network the BBC shared insights into the impact global sporting events such as Wimbledon, the World Cup, and the Euros had on their traffic peaks between 2011 and 2018.
We’ve shared a link to the full presentation in the thread. ⬇️

Digital transformation starts with physical infrastructure. Fibre in the ground, data centres, submarine cables, and IXPs
Our Head of Global Engagement, Nurani Nimpuno, joined the Digital For Development Hub's "Why Should We Care About African Data Centers?" podcast to talk about how IXPs keep traffic local and why LINX expanded to Nairobi, Mombasa, and now Accra.

Every digital interaction is a journey. Data travels through networks that have been optimised for speed and resilience, but not always for energy efficiency. When traffic takes unnecessarily long routes – a phenomenon often referred to as tromboning – energy consumption increases and emissions multiply.

Thank you to Innovation News Network for featuring an article from LINX CEO Jennifer Holmes titled From Mast to Mesh which explores the resilience and readiness of Europe’s #digitalinfrastructure.
Real #networkresilience at scale depends on diversity and redundancy in network architecture. A single overloaded route or under-provisioned link can cascade into wider failures – a peril that only increases as applications demand lower #latency, higher availability, and seamless user experiences.
