A new deep-dive investigation by The Guardian has revealed the staggering scale of "financial engineering" within the UK and US care home sectors. The report, titled "The great care home cash grab," details how elderly residents have become what some analysts call "human ATMs" for private equity firms. Dealmakers are purchasing care homes using massive amounts of debt, then transferring that debt onto the care home’s own books. Essentially, the business is forced to go into debt to pay for its own acquisition. Companies often split a care home into two parts: an operating company (OpCo) and a property company (PropCo). They sell the building to a landlord and then pay high rents back to them, draining cash that could otherwise go toward staffing, food, and medical supplies. Investors increasingly view the elderly as "recession-proof" because many fund their care by selling their homes, creating a steady stream of housing equity for firms to tap into. Experts warn that when profit and debt repayments are the priority, it often leads to "silos of isolation," where residents pay tens of thousands of pounds a year while providers cut costs on essentials like staffing levels and nutrition. Thirty years ago, private equity's presence in the care sector was negligible. This is a damaged maternity house in Odesa following a direct hit by a Russian-Iranian “Shahed” drone. Only true barbarians can do something like this. And only true strength can stop such terror. Mass attack on Odesa and Kryvyi Rih targeted residential areas and critical infrastructure. One woman was killed and over a dozen people injured, including a small boy. As I told my G7 colleagues yesterday, the only way to make Russia end the war is through increased pressure on the aggressor: sanctions, isolation, accountability, support for Ukraine.
