Today, since 3rd March, 1975 at Kilembe Mines Hospital, with gratitude to God for the many blessings-- through trials, tribulations, successes and the strength to overcome adversity-- that I count: one, by one--so that I am not tempted to take anything, anyone and any experience for granted. And to my @UgandaEC colleagues that surprised me and my birthdaymate @NsuubeR with cake. God bless you.

While in this supermarket to buy today's Sunday newspapers, I bumped into this wonderful man who lent me money that enabled me to buy an air ticket to report for my masters degree studies at the University of Oslo in Norway in 2002. Hans Venvik was the Deputy Head of the Norwegian Embassy in Uganda in 2002, when I applied for, and got a scholarship to study at the University of Oslo. The scholarship required that one buys an ticket to Oslo on their own, and get refunded after reporting to the university. But I was broke at the time, having spent my last cash on paying for a small banana plantation in the village, a few days before the news of the scholarship had come through. So, upon receiving the letter of offer of admission for the Master of Philosophy in Media and Communications, with only a few weeks to the reporting date, I took a bold step, of faith and hope, and drove to the Norwegian embassy to ask if they could buy me a ticket. They always say that when you do not ask, the answer will always be no. At the embassy, along Acacia Road, near Kamwokya, the secretary laughed so hard and loud when I told her that I wanted to see the ambassador to ask for a ticket. "The embassy never buys tickets for anyone going to study in Norway, but go in and talk to the Deputy Head of Mission, and hear what he tells you. Take your chance, omugisha gwendahi tigwe gwenkoko, "she told me, adding the Rukiga saying which loosely states that " The blessings of a guinea fowl is different from that of a hen, although both look the same. " I knocked on the door, and walked in, and firmly shook this man's hands and went straight to the point. " I got a Quota scholarship to study at the University of Oslo, but I have no money for an air ticket. I am requesting to borrow $700 from you or the embassy, which I will pay back upon refund from the scholarship, " I told him. He looked at me with out saying a word. I then added: " I have a logbook of my car, which I am willing to leave with you as security, to guarantee that I will pay. " I had a year earlier bought my very much prized Toyota Starlet, UDQ 890. I handed over the logbook, and he looked at it, and looked at me, looked at the logbook again, and again at me, and then said: "I am lending you the money you have asked, " "Here are my bank details. Make sure you pay it back as soon as you get your scholarship money" But he did something more: He did not take the car logbook. "I am not taking the logbook. I am trusting that you will you to pay back." And just like that, I walked away with $700 dollars in cash, went straight to SN Brussels Airline, booked a flight and on 1st August 2002, I was on the plane to Norway. One month after reporting at the University of Oslo, my scholarship money was processed, and the first call on it was to pay back the loan. And since that time, we remained friends, became family, to the extent that when years later I was working and living in London, I invited him and his family to visit me at my home in Barnet, North London. But nowadays, borrowing and lending can be a tough call. You borrow or lend when you are smiling, but paying back can be something else. Borrowing and lending can also be a cause of enmity between and among people who were once friends. When you go to borrow, go with an open mind. If the person is able to lend you, thank God, if they are not able to, do not curse them. If they say they have no money, do not hate them. They may also be servicing loans, but without making it public. Except in banks and other financial institutions, when an individual lends, it often doesn't mean that they have money, but they may have chosen to sacrifice. When you are not able to pay back in time, do not hide, be open and make efforts, even if you pay a small amount of money, but consistently until you complete the loan. Mostly importantly, we should not use lending and borrowing to blackmail people.

Dear parents : Don’t sign up your sons for our program!! Our program is rough, tough and traumatic. In the 10 days your son will spend with us, he will be shouted at, he will wake up at 04 am to jog in the dark, he will carry his back-bag with 40kgs on his back for 17 kms, he will be made to roll in the mud, he will fall and kneel on stones, he will get wounds all over and that’s not all. When he arrives late for an activity, he will come kneeling, when he refuses to shower, he will be forced to shower in the middle of the road at 1am in the night. In that camp, He will have his own tent ⛺️ and if he fails to keep it clean, we will dislodge it so he can sleep in the grass. When he steals another person’s property, he will be punished. Our camp is not good for your boy. Don’t bring him. He will be made to participate in difficult drills rain or sunshine. In our camp, we force boys to respect their parents. We rebuke boys who are disobedient. We rebuke girly tendencies. We indoctrinate them against homosexuality and gay tendencies. Everything is tough in this camp. It’s “traumatic” as idiots call it. When he’s shy , he will be forced to be bolden up. I don’t want ur son in our camp. Look for camps that are soft. Where they don’t shout at kids. Where they carry them around on the back. Where the kids talk back to their instructors and they smile. Look for those camps.
