@roanoketimes Well, that is sort of right, it was in a museum since 1983 (?) before being moved to NYC. It was moved because space shuttle Discovery replaced it at the D.C. museum. That was ten years ago.

@nsj This was the close to the problem airports facced in the early 70's with widebodies starting to show up. Or at least they worried about it. L1011s and DC-10s showing up at places like LGA or DCA.

Beyond the “how many planes can we safely shove down the runway and out of this airspace in a limited amount of time” question, there’s just the practical aspects of handling this glut of passengers all descending on the airport at the same time.

San Diego’s airport is a strange case study. There’s only one runway, & noise abatement limits takeoffs and other loud activity (with a few exceptions) until after 6:30am LT. As a result there are 21 flights scheduled to depart at or before 6:45. A serious push every AM.
