For years, youngsters in Chennai have struggled to find space to play, especially on weekends when grounds overflow with scores of cricket teams vying for space. This is all set to change as Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is setting up large sports grounds in all 15 zones, aiming to ensure hassle-free playtime for everyone. With an allocation of ₹45 crore, GCC will develop at least one ground per zone, each spanning more than five acres where land is available. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said land identification is in progress and work would begin next month. “Many existing grounds are congested, and several GCC schools also lack playgrounds. These new facilities will help nurture young talent,” he said. The proposed grounds will feature multiple sports facilities, including open gyms, badminton courts, cricket nets, and table tennis areas.
