Reproductive Health Network Kenya
Featured on @ntvkenya News Kenya continues to face a worrying rise in maternal deaths, with the @MOH_Kenya reporting that a significant proportion of these deaths involve adolescent girls aged 15–19. Five counties — Homa Bay County, West Pokot County, Tana River County, Samburu County, and Garissa County — continue to carry a disproportionate burden of new HIV infections, early teenage pregnancies, low contraceptive uptake, and gender-based violence (GBV). Experts attribute these trends to persistent structural and social barriers, including harmful traditional norms, limited access to age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health information, and gaps in Sexual, Reproductive, and Maternal Health (SRMH) services tailored to adolescent girls and young women. Evidence generated through the Her Health Initiative highlights stark disparities in HIV knowledge among adolescents in the five counties: •51.1% in Homa Bay •38.4% in West Pokot •35.3% in Tana River •27% in Samburu •15.1% in Garissa These counties also report some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy nationally. In response, @MOH_Kenya, in partnership with @NCPD_Kenya, @rhnkorg and @ReproRightsAFR , is advancing the Her Health Initiative to address systemic gaps and strengthen access to quality, youth-responsive SRMH services. Speaking during the coverage, @DrAbeySheikh, Director General of NCPD, underscored the urgency of action: “We have a high maternal mortality rate of 355 per 100,000 deliveries. This has remained stubbornly high for a long time. This government initiative is to ensure that no single mother dies while giving birth.” The initiative represents a coordinated government-led effort to strengthen health systems, improve accountability, and ensure that adolescent girls and young women can access dignified, equitable care. 🔗 Watch the full news feature here: youtu.be/1ZBhup8dNzw?si… #SystemsThatWorkForHer

When a girl becomes a mother before she is ready, it is rarely a personal failure. It is often the result of gaps in education, barriers in healthcare, silence in communities, and policies that never reached her. ED Nelly Munyasia
