Together with diplomats from 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 🇫🇮 🇮🇹 🇫🇷 🇭🇷 🇨🇿 🇪🇸 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 🇸🇪 🇪🇪 🇵🇱 🇳🇱 and Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski, Belarusian democratic forces laid flowers in Vilnius to honor the victims of #Chornobyl. We must keep their memory and build a future of peace, accountability, and safety.

1986. Chernobyl commemoration. Flower laying ceremony at Sapniegų parke, Vilniuje. To remember the victims and the lasting suffering. A disaster that unveiled -if still needed- the blatant disregard by the Soviet regime for human dignity in its aftermath.

40 yrs ago, cynical Soviet officials' negligence caused the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. In 2022, russia seized both Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia NPPs, violating, among other, all key principles of nuclear safety and security.

✊ Ales Bialiatski addressed the Lithuanian Seimas Bialiatski’s visit and his speech at the plenary session of the Seimas coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, as well as the 30th anniversary of the founding of Viasna. An important part of the visit was the meeting of Ales Bialiatski with Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Juozas Olekas. Head of @viasna96 emphasized the importance of the principled stance taken by Lithuanian MPs, who help mobilize international support and make critical decisions regarding the Belarusian agenda. And finally, at today’s @FAC meeting, I spoke on Belarus: Lukashenko continues to escalate tensions at our borders and has just labeled the European Humanities University an “extremist organization,” putting students, faculty, and their families at risk. We must respond decisively—apply pressure on the regime and deny it any chance to exploit global instability to increase threats against us.

Latvia condemns Belarus’ decision to label the European Humanities University #EHU as “extremist.” Targeting students, academics, and free thought is unacceptable. We stand in solidarity with the university, its faculty and students. @LV_Belarus

Sweden is deeply troubled to learn that the Supreme Court of Belarus has declared the European Humanities University in Vilnius an “extremist organisation”. This is an attack on academic freedom, the opportunities for Belarusian youth and on Lithuania. Sweden is a longstanding supporter of EHU and we stand in solidarity with the university, its faculity and students, as well as with Lithuania.

Belarus’ decision to designate the European Humanitarian University as an extremist organization is deeply troubling. Such a step affects thousands of students, alumni, and academic staff and raises broader questions about the environment for independent education. It constitutes a serious violation of the right to education free from political interference. Estonia expresses its disagreement with this decision and emphasizes that the pursuit of knowledge and academic freedom should not be associated with extremism. We stand ready to support the #EHU community and Lithuania.

Minsk’s move to brand the European Humanities University - an accredited Belarusian university in exile in Vilnius - an “extremist organization” is outrageous. It puts students, faculty, and families at serious risk and obstructs access to independent, unbiased education. It is yet another hostile act by the Lukashenko regime against #Lithuania and the #EU. We stand ready to back the #EHU community.

Belarusians mark the 1918 declaration of independence and their enduring aspiration for a democratic country. Unfortunately, meanwhile 889 people are being kept behind bars for their political views. We continue supporting those who are striving for a free Belarus. Жыве Беларусь!

On Belarus Freedom Day, we reaffirm the EU’s solidarity with the people of Belarus.  Belarusians mark the 1918 declaration of independence and their enduring aspiration for a free and democratic country.  The EU will continue to support a democratic, sovereign and independent Belarus.

On the ground at the Lithuanian-Belarus border. Today’s release of 250 individuals is a significant humanitarian milestone and a testament to the President’s commitment to direct, hard-nosed diplomacy. Freedom is our goal. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Lithuanian partners for their pivotal role in this mission.
