Today marks four years since Russia started its full‑scale war of aggression against Ukraine. Every day, Russia kills Ukrainian civilians and destroys everything Ukraine has built and defended. Yet #Ukraine stands heroically – defendingits land, its freedom, and its independence. It defends the whole Europe, paying a dreadful and tragic price. Latvia’s support for Ukraine is steadfast and unwavering. We are and will remain side by side with our Ukrainian friends, with the powerful Ukrainian nation. 20 January 1991 was the bloodiest day in Latvia’s 🇱🇻 struggle to restore its independence. Illegal Soviet occupation forces brutally suppressed unarmed supporters of Latvian independence, killing five people and injuring thirteen.   More than 50,000 residents of Latvia selflessly took to the streets, standing at the barricades for two weeks in the bitter winter cold to defend the dream of regaining freedom.   Moscow failed to silence our voices. Western media reported on the events in the capitals of the Baltic States on an unprecedented scale.   The Danish Cultural Institute in Riga, the information centres of the American Latvian Association and the World Federation of Free Latvians, as well as the Information Office in Stockholm, provided the very first informational support allowing the world to know what was happening here.   Political support from the United States 🇺🇸, Canada 🇨🇦, Iceland 🇮🇸and other countries was invaluable at a time when the outcome of the barricades was still uncertain.   Latvia is grateful to all its foreign partners and Latvians in exile for their support at this decisive moment. Political pressure on the Soviet Union was sufficient to deter the use of even wider violence.   Latvia restored its independence. #Barricades35

At today’s #UNSC emergency meeting on Venezuela, Latvia called for de-escalation, inclusive dialogue and respect of international law by all, expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela and their right to freedom and democracy. The Maduro regime does not represent the will of the Venezuelan people. Latvia encourages all relevant actors to prioritize diplomatic efforts and work collectively towards a peaceful, democratic and sustainable future for Venezuela. Latvia closely follows the situation in Venezuela, coordinating within the EU and with partners. We’ve never recognised legitimacy of Maduro regime after the stolen elections. Venezuela is better off without him. We call for restraint and respect for international law by all.
