Libya has just experienced the deadliest flood of the 21st Century, with 7,000 confirmed dead. In the city of Derna, home to 90,000 people, up to 20,000 are feared dead. 25% of the city is estimated to be destroyed after two dams collapsed due to extreme rainfall. Imagery via @Maxar

An important read 👇 Climate change assessments ... paint an increasingly dire picture of the future. However, the assumption that the future will be worse than the present may be wrong for many aspects of human well-being nature.com/articles/s4155…

@MicheleLBarnes @GEC_Journal Thanks Michele, really interesting. I suspect it also means that we need to reflect on the nature of adaptive capacity measures/indicators and whether they adequately reflect the diversity in which people/orgs choose to adapt (whether they have the capacity to or not)

@L_P_Jones @GEC_Journal Thanks @L_P_Jones! Our results do raise Qs re: when/how diff. dimensions of adaptive capacity support adaptation. Though in this case it did not predict minor/moderate adaptations, it did predict what some call 'transformative adaptation'. But agreed, a lot to think about here...

Surprising & very relevant study from @MicheleLBarnes & co finds: Adaptive capacity is NOT reliable proxy for adaptation actions. Instead, actions better reflected by severity of past climate impacts Lots of 🤔to do for climate practitioners as a result sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Discussed with partners including @COP28_UAE & @soukeyna_kane of WBG critical capacity & resource gaps towards ensuring that #Somalia is able to access & make use of international climate finance. Its encouraging to see the level of commitment to support FCV-affected countries.

Investing in peace means investing in #ClimateAction. But while we spent trillions on global military expenditure, sufficient climate finance is still lacking. We must shift that proportion substantially to ensure safety and security of people on this planet. #MSC2023

Love this! It's crazy what the latest AI developments are bringing to the table and what it means for CC research/policy I tried looking at something similar with an older GPT version, with similar 🤯 twitter.com/L_P_Jones/stat…
Dr Michal Nachmany 🌍@NachmanyMichal

The developments of the last hours from @OpenAI - the #GPTchat - the craziest chatbot ever, are mind-blowing. 🪡 Brace yourself for what this does for #ClimatePolicy: I asked it 'what makes good climate legislation'. It answered, in seconds, with machine generated text: 1/10

Great thread by @schipper_lisa on major stumbling block in adaptation finance While more money is needed to respond to CC, adaptation and development should not be classified in a binary way Instead we need to think about cumulative (& more effective) financing
