I have hyped it up long enough! Here is a thread on Neumark and company’s recent paper, and what it means for the future of minimum wage research. socsci.uci.edu/~jantonio/Pape…

In my job market paper, I use data on >1/4 million college applicants and a regression discontinuity design to show that admission to research universities impacts students’ partisanship and voter turnout 10+ years after applying for college. #EconTwitter DanielFiroozi.com/jmp

Dear paper writers, consider using \𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦[𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗿𝗲𝗳=𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲]{𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘧} instead of simply \𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦{𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘧} to make it easier for a reader to jump to the references and back.

A lot of people hammering me for having a PhD in economics and knowing nothing about how the economy works: I plead guilty. I got a PhD in economics largely because I loved Freakonomics & wanted to study the data of sports & random things about people.

In your writing, be generous with citations. The cost of citing a marginally relevant paper is low, the cost of omitting a truly relevant paper is high, and one's own assessment of relevance is imperfect. #AcademicTwitter #EconTwitter

If in a staggered DiD setting I write an equation with a full set of treatment indicators by treated cohort and calendar time, and include c(i) + f(t) (unit and time "fixed effects"), would you still call that a "fixed effects" model?

@mahamino84 Yeah, I realized later that I was confusing anorexia and anorexia nervosa, but I think they could have described this better!

@emmaloney314 I actually heard a few accounts of this recently and remembered your tweet: people lose their sense of taste/smell and stop eating enough because apparently eating sucks if you can’t taste/smell

@economeager The GRE is also a critical signal for students coming from less prestigious schools in the US. GRE prep and testing is much less costly than Ivy League tuition.

I think we should abolish the GRE, not because it's unfair -- it is, but so is everything else -- but because it requires thinking within the status quo which is exactly what we DON'T want in students. Studying for it is an unconscionable waste of a bunch of smart people's time.

@_alice_evans @jenniferdoleac It’s definitely possible! The directionality of the relationship isn’t obvious to me, though. Does existing misogyny push young women out or does a lack of young women breed misogyny?

@emmaloney314 @jenniferdoleac My prior is that self named incels are guys below 35 who can’t find girlfriends. I’d be curious to know the strongest predictor of state variation If it is sex ratios, then I think I guessed correctly. But happy to reject my priors if wrong 😊

Does disdain for women increase the pay gap? Yes Evidence from Google In US states where search terms are often misogynist, employers are probably more prejudiced, and women earn less than men. economics.uci.edu/files/docs/202… Elizabeth Malony, JMP.

@emmaloney314 @jenniferdoleac Ahaha! So that was precisely my prediction, no? Young guys struggling to get wives/ long term girlfriends. Wait, let me rephrase, do we have an age breakdown of the misogynist web searches? Are they mostly younger or older? I always thought it was resentful <35s?
