Pretty wild tonal whiplash to see the Canadian media venerate Stephen Lewis in memoriam after spending the last 48 hours freaking out that the child he raised who has his identical political beliefs is a godless communist maniac.

@DrHappyguy @jenhassum I think Lewis is admired mostly for his post politics work around AIDS and challenging South African apartheid. If anything his time as ONDP leader has been criticised.

Condolences to friends and family of Stephen Lewis as Canada loses a great one. A tireless fighter for all, Stephen's life's work was in combating inequality in Canada and around the world. From union halls to legislative halls his voice inspired, his actions delivered change.

I think its amazing that a guy who just wrote in a US rag thay Jews are being pushed out of public life, is also the guy that leads an attack on, what, the second ever Jewish leader of a national politicsl party.

@TheLeathal13 @Devin_Heroux VSweeting was NEVER a good skip but always an outstanding allrounder, so she'd been deployed wrongly before, same goes for SBirchard who is an impeccable 2nd but no backender. But I also understand that not plenty of high quality eligible leads are around.

JUST IN Jocelyn Peterman is now a part of Team Einarson in place of Val Sweeting. Peterman will play lead and vice skip. Shannon Birchard third, Karlee Burgess second.

@cullenoncurling Don't get this. Karlee Burgess is a lifelong 3rd, so why swapping with SBirchard? And JPeterman has never "leaded", so why bothering with her?

I'll say one last thing: people like Beck and Nenshi immediately dumping on Lewis hours after he got elected didn't even try to back a different candidate. Neither got involved in the race. If either felt Lewis was so bad, why not back another person in the contest, or draft someone not in the field?

Today, the federal New Democratic Party selected its new leader. It is clear that the direction of the federal party under this new leader, someone who openly cheered for the defeat of the Alberta NDP government, is not in the interests of Alberta. Last year, Alberta’s New Democrats voted overwhelmingly to make membership in the federal party optional. Many thousands of our provincial members, including myself, are not members of the federal party. We are a big tent and welcome the support of people who vote for every federal party. We believe in Alberta and we believe in Canadian energy and the good jobs it creates. We believe in more pipelines and in reducing emissions. We believe in strong public services and a strong jobs-driven economy to help pay for them. This is what we are fighting for every day. Albertans deserve federal leaders who understand the importance of Alberta and our essential role in the federation. Our focus is not on what the federal NDP says or does. Our fight is with Danielle Smith and the separatist UCP. Albertans deserve a better government, and we are here to be that better government.

In response to the election of Avi Lewis as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Rachel Chertkoff, Senior Vice President, Community Engagement, and Richard Marceau Senior Vice-President, Strategic Initiatives and General Counsel, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, issued the following statement: “Today, the New Democratic Party elected Avi Lewis as its leader. We are left with a deep sense of sadness. “Rachel’s uncle ran for a provincial arm of the NDP in 1963. He believed, as so many Canadian Jews of his generation did, that the democratic left was a natural home for a community that had faced persecution. It is hard to imagine that he would recognize the party today. "The two of us, along with other concerned Jewish and allied activists, have spent years at the table with NDP leaders, staff, and members. We engaged in good faith and made the case that protecting Jewish Canadians from hatred is not partisan, but foundational. The hope we had that these leaders could bring themselves back from the brink is now exhausted. “This weekend’s convention was a stark reminder of how far the party has drifted from its roots as the voice of Canada’s working class and trade union movement. Canadian Jews helped build that movement. Today, many are made to feel they no longer belong in it. At a time when antisemitism has reached a crisis, the NDP has become a hostile place for the vast majority of Jewish Canadians who want to fight for progressive values. 94 per centof Jewish Canadians support the existence of the State of Israel yet have been pushed out. “Avi Lewis is himself Jewish, and we respect his family’s history in this party. But Jewish identity is not a shield against accountability. When a leader declares that Zionism is inseparable from ethnic cleansing, he is not engaging in legitimate policy critique. He is telling Jewish Canadians that a core part of their identity is illegitimate. That is exclusion. “On the eve of this convention, rabbis from across our community issued a clear call. They warned that Jewish members feel increasingly alienated, that antizionism is being used as a cover for antisemitism, and that NDP spaces are becoming unsafe for Jewish and all Canadians with mainstream views. “We have said before and repeat now that criticism of Israeli government policy is legitimate. But there is a line between criticism and the systematic delegitimization of Jewish identity. That line has been crossed repeatedly. Today, it was crossed again, without ambiguity. “We will hold Avi Lewis, as we hold every public leader, accountable. “But we will not pretend today is anything other than what it is. A painful rupture, decades in the making, with dangerous implications for our community and all Canadians.” -30-

I’ll be generous by assuming this line came from a speechwriter, and that the Premier didn’t know that it’s verbatim Iranian regime propaganda, widely used as an antisemitic dog whistle. But he degrades himself and his office by turning the murderous nature and genocidal intent of the Islamic Republic into a cheap political punchline. Does he think the regime’s advanced efforts to build nuclear weapons and use them to “turn the little Satan (Israel) into a ball of fire” is a joke? Does he understand the regime is detested by the overwhelming majority of the Iranian people, who desperately hope that this military campaign will accelerate the end of the Mullahs’ reign of terror? Does he have zero understanding of the decades of violence and terror spread by the regime’s proxies across the world, from the hundreds of thousands murdered by the Iranian backed Assad regime, to the decades violent Jew hatred of Hamas & Hizbollah? Does he think it is a mere distraction to stop Iran from building 100 ballistic missiles every month, some with a range that can strike Europe? I’ve had high regard for Premier Kinew, despite our political differences. I hope this was just a monetary lapse in judgement. But I fear it reflects the Canadian left’s brain dead embrace of even the worst regimes if they are opposed by Israel and the United States.

@cullenoncurling So looking at the curling Canada rules, if team einerson registered as a five-person team, losing two of those players will result them forfeiting their ranking. Are we sure they are guaranteed into next year's Scotties?

With Team Lawes announcing it's two players out, that will also lose them their Scotties berth. So the Scotties next year: Team Canada: Einarson Wild Card 1: Rachel Homan Wild Card 2: Taylor Reese-Hansen And WC3 will be determined post-provincials, as it was this season
