September 11, 2001. 9:37 a.m. Lt. Col. Marilyn Wills was in a Pentagon conference room when American Airlines Flight 77 struck. The fireball threw her across the table. Her hair caught fire. The room went black with smoke. Crawling, she felt a hand grab her belt. "My name is Lois," a voice said. Lois Stevens, a civilian employee, injured and choking. "Stay with me. Where I go, you go." Wills pressed her Army sweater into Lois's hands. "Breathe through this." When Lois collapsed, her nylons melted to her legs, Wills lifted her onto her back and carried her. Six others followed the sound of her voice through the wreckage. They reached a sealed second-floor window. They broke it. Cool air rushed in. Wills stayed inside. "I'll go last," she said, and helped lower every person out before she fell into rescuers' arms below. Lois Stevens lived 23 more years because of that decision. Wills received the Soldier's Medal and Purple Heart for her burns, smoke inhalation, and traumatic brain injury. Thirteen days later, she returned to the Pentagon. She later deployed to Afghanistan. She never called herself a hero. "We lost so many that day," she said quietly. "They were my friends." Some leaders give orders. Others carry people through the fire. God bless Lt. Col. Marilyn Wills — and all who served on 9/11.

When rescuers finally reached her, they didn't see an athlete; they saw a body so badly burned they weren't sure she would survive the helicopter ride to the hospital. Turia Pitt was 24 years old, a brilliant mining engineer with a love for the outdoors. She was competing in a 100-kilometer ultramarathon in the Australian Outback when the wind shifted. A brushfire suddenly trapped her in a rocky gorge with nowhere to hide. The heat was so intense it felt like the world was melting. By the time the flames passed, 65 percent of her body was burned. She didn't just lose her skin; she lost her fingers, parts of her face, and her vision was damaged. In an instant, her life as a fit, independent woman seemed to vanish. Doctors were blunt about her chances. They told her she would likely never run or live a normal life again. She spent the next two years in a hospital bed, undergoing over 200 surgeries. The physical pain was a constant weight, but the mental battle was even harder. She had to wear a compression mask for years to help her skin heal. During this time, some media outlets were heartless. They used photos of her for shock value, with some even saying her appearance was frightening. Turia saw the stares and the cruel headlines. Instead of retreating, she decided to own her story. She looked at her new reflection and realized that while the fire changed her outside, it couldn't touch her mind. She refused to hide. She began the grueling process of relearning how to eat, walk, and use her hands. Every movement was a struggle, but she kept moving. "I’m the luckiest woman in the world," she told the public. It sounds like a strange thing to say, but she meant it. She felt lucky because she had been given a second chance to live. She didn't want to just exist; she wanted to thrive. She decided that her scars were not a sign of what she lost, but a symbol of how much she could survive. Years later, she did what the doctors said was impossible. She stood at the starting line of the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. This is one of the toughest races on the planet. It includes a massive swim, a long bike ride, and a full marathon. Because her skin cannot sweat properly due to the burns, the heat of the race was a major risk to her life. She didn't let fear stop her. She crossed the finish line with a smile on her face. She showed the world that a "broken" body is only broken if the spirit gives up. She proved that the fire didn't end her life; it just started a new chapter. She silenced every critic and every cruel headline by simply refusing to stay down. Today, Turia is a best-selling author and a mother who travels the world to inspire others. She doesn't see herself as a victim of a tragedy. She sees herself as a woman who found her true strength in the middle of a furnace. She doesn't want people to feel sorry for her; she wants them to look at their own lives and keep pushing. Turia often says, "We’re all much more capable than we think." She is the living proof that when you lose everything, you find out exactly who you are. The fire may have taken her skin, but it gave her a voice that resonates across the globe. This is why she is so loved. She doesn't expect you to be there. She is grateful that people have come out to see her. She is humble, down to earth and just lovely! No training can make people like this. These are qualities one is born with🥹💙
