The head of PEN America has now *quit* over Thursday’s article about discrimination against Jewish and Israeli authors. PEN reported in the crisis without even calling it antisemitism, but its half-assed pushback against cultural boycotts was too much.
This shows you where we are, and how bad it really is.

I talked with @DanaBashCNN today about what a Jewish and democratic Israel — consistent with its own Declaration of Independence, and something I long to see — would actually look like. A few key points: 1. Israel can't be a genuine democracy while it's occupying the West Bank & Gaza and denying civil & political rights to Palestinians there, fully half the people under its rule. 2. Like B’Tselem, Omer Bartov, and the Lemkin Institute, I think — with deep sadness — that Israel's conduct in Gaza meets the definition of genocide. But even if you don’t, it’s profoundly inconsistent with the Jewish value that every one of those Palestinian kids were created in the image of God, just like ours. 3. The freedom, safety & thriving of both Israelis and Palestinians is deeply intertwined. Israelis will not be safe until Palestinians are free. We need a U.S. foreign policy aimed firmly at making this real. Shabbat Shalom to everyone, and especially to everyone who refuses to compromise on anyone else’s humanity.

@ProfDBernstein @realDavidKatzin somewhat true. You neglect that Israel blocked refugees from returning, whether they had left voluntarily or not. And there were many forceful, intentional displacements. But, yes, this emerged from a true civil war and an invasion of 5 nations' armies.

You mean the Arab side started a war of annihilation, and the Arab population fled, either to get out of harm’s way, bc things were going south, or for fear of Israeli reprisaks (what they would have done to the Israelis if given the chance). When the war ended, their leaders refused to negotiate for peace, and assassinated the one Arab leader, the king of Jordan, who wanted to reach a settlement, leaving the Palestinian Arabs immigrated in refugee camps mere miles from their previous homes, unable to return and forbidden by their new masters to build new lives

I watched this conversation between Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah twice.
An Israeli whose parents were murdered on October 7 and a Palestinian peace activist, sitting together, refusing to hate each other. It should be the most viral clip on the internet.
Then I opened the comments.
Thousands of people, most of them nowhere near the region, telling a Palestinian man he's wrong about his own home. Telling a bereaved Israeli his grief is propaganda. The two people with the most reason to hate chose not to, and the response from the safest corners of the internet was to inform them they're doing it wrong.
I understand the anger behind some of it. Real people are grieving, and the war is not an abstraction. But when peace itself becomes the thing you attack, the problem is no longer the conflict. It's you.

When @amnesty released its bogus "genocide" report, its Israeli branch published a rebuttal that showed in many ways how its logic was wrong. Rather than answer the criticisms, Amnesty responded by dismantling the Israeli branch.
As a result, the Amnesty Israel website is gone, along with the response.
I certainly don't agree with the Amnesty Israel characterization of the war, but it was as solid a debunking of @Amnesty's genocide accusation as anyone has written.
So I just posted it on my blog for search engines to find again.

In Northern Ireland 🇮🇪, a model of a mosque was burned with a sign stating "Secure our borders and end radical Islam."
This is abhorrent. Burning a mosque is sending a message to any and all Muslims.
Hate in any form should never be tolerated against ANY group of people. And this attempt to intimidate the Muslim community must be condemned by everyone.
