I can't believe how many #MLB ABS challenges there are in virtually meaningless situations. If I were a manager I'd go ballistic on some of my players.

@MarkCHealey Not playing Benge yesterday might have been the dumbest lineup decision made by any team this season.

If you believe that Carlos Mendoza makes the lineup and is primarily responsible for the pitching moves that take place during the game, then yes, he should be fired. If you believe that Mendoza is simply a middle manager who is handed the lineup and pitching assignments for the day, one could argue that he is only partially responsible for the team's performance over the last 100 or so games. However, you could also make the argument that he still should be fired, because he's not pushing back on data he may not fully support or embrace. Either way, the situation is a total mess. The "vote of confidence" delivered via a story by MLB.com was IMO, a weak attempt to avoid media scrutiny. Carlos Mendoza faces the media several times a day and has to stand there and take all sorts of questions about roster construction, pitching moves, and lineup decisions, etc. As of May 8, David Stearns has constructed one of the worst teams in Mets history, both in performance and value, and should be the one in front of the cameras. Maybe he should just fire Mendoza, if for no other reason than to spare him the indignity of having to defend the ridiculous roster he has been handed.

@RonShandler When I first saw these standings, before I read the text, I thought maybe this was one of the alternative leagues discussed in your book...where the goal is to finish last...I was ready to congratulate you on your fine start...but, alas, then I read the text.

DON'T ASK. I'm also a Mets fan, so there's that. I'm still going to do my darndest to climb out of the cellar — yes, 14th place is still a climb — but realistically, it's going to be a loooong season. Even if you don't need a telescope to see the teams in front of you, it's tough to stay engaged when you're far behind this early. Thankfully, fantasy baseball comes in many shapes, sizes and flavors. DFS is an obvious option. You can find a bunch of folks in similarly dire straits and just start over. You can form a monthly league. There are also innovative side contests you can participate in to keep your competitive juices flowing. "Fantasy, Reconstructed: The Innovator's Playbook for Fantasy Sports" is all about finding a format that keeps you engaged while you battle it out elsewhere. I'm already gathering friends to play contests like BASES, Quint-Inning and retro-drafting, all of which give me reason to read the boxscores each morning.
