Driving meaningful change in road safety. This mutual objective and goal was among the things discussed between Ministry of Works and delegation from Bloomberg Philanthropies during a courtesy visit led by its director, Ms Kelly Larson this morning. This effort is instrumental, not only in our quest to improve road safety across Malaysia but also to reduce road fatalities. Bloomberg Philanthropies has been working closely with Malaysia as part of the 15 collaborating countries for its Bloomberg Philanthropies' Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) which supports road safety efforts, including training programs and collaborations with local organisations. The pilot project of this collaboration between BIGRS and MOW was sealed via the successful implementation of the program at one of the signalised pedestrian crossings (LPKSI) located at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Ladang Gadong, Banting Selangor, with a total cost of RM700,000.00. The Ministry also has developed the Road Accident Management System (RAMS), which is an online system platform that collects and analyze road accident data, to generate frequent accident locations (blackspots) and 24-hour Fatal Accident Reports. Data from the RAMS system is obtained through integration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Road Traffic Accident system. The data obtained can be shared with Bloomberg (BIGRS) for analysis purposes, which can subsequently help the Ministry to address the issue of increasing road accidents each year. I am honoured to extend this collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies which will also focus on data-driven solutions, improving traffic management, and raising awareness to mitigate risks. I believe the collaboration which will combine Bloomberg Philanthropies' expertise in road safety and Malaysia's commitment to improving its infrastructure, will promise to deliver long-term, sustainable impact for road users. During the meeting, I have also highlighted implementation of other innovative strategies to ensure safer streets, better enforcement and more effective public education campaigns, marking a significant step towards a safer and more secure road environment for Malaysians. For the record, MOW, through the Road Safety Infrastructure Upgrading Program, which focuses on improving accident-prone areas (blackspots), has taken proactive steps to reduce accidents caused by road engineering factors. In 2024, RM80 million has been allocated for: - Treating 86 accident-prone areas - Installing new streetlights in 275 high-risk location nationwide - Constructing 35 pedestrian crossings with traffic lights - Installing 14 traffic lights at the intersection - Completing 3 pedestrian bridge projects Meanwhile, in line with the spirit of MYJalan and Malaysia Madani, the Ministry is committed to continue this program to reduce the road accident rate, in line with the target of the 2022-2030 Road Safety Plan, which aims to reduce the road accident death rate by 50% by 2030. #KKR # roadsafety #BloombergPhilanthropies #MYJalan #KamiDiSini #jalankitaselamat #MalaysiaMadani
