Hey everyone. I wanted to introduce myself & say hi to those I’ve known for years. I’m Bryan, I used to do a podcast/twitter called Sacred Icon for half a decade with a friend of mine. Last Chalice is just me, hoping to bring that passion back again. Its good to see you🤘🏻

I finished Mouse P.I. For Hire. It’s hard not to recommend this $30 title that comes in at around 15 hours long. The art style, music, voice work, animations and overall presentation is impeccable. I just wish the same could be said for the rest of the experience. The so called “boomer shooter” is one of my favorite genres in video games. I’ve been playing them since the original DOOM back in 1993 and have loved watching the genre evolve in numerous ways. Mouse P.I. clearly takes inspiration from the long line of shooters that came before it, but never manages to be as good as any of them. The shooting segments more often than not boils down to specific areas that are scattered with doors that will open and spawn enemies. You know exactly when fights are going to happen and they almost always play out the same. They don’t last long enough either. Shooting feels good, but not great and you’re never given a reason to use more than one weapon (likely the Tommy gun) throughout the entire story. Putting aside the wonderful animation and artwork, you can throw a rock and hit 10 shooters that play better than this one. Worse then, is that Mouse P.I. decides to split its focus on being a detective noir with being a classic arena shooter. Almost half of the time you’re in the game will be spent in a hub zone, talking to NPC’s, pinning clues, walking around, driving your car on a map or playing a very boring baseball card mini game. I’ve already stated that the gunplay is nothing special, but it’s far more interesting than anything else you’ll be doing. A shorter experience that focused exclusively on the shooting segments in a level by level format would have been much preferred. I lost interest in the story before the halfway point and it never managed to bring me back. Characters ramble on and on with dialog that is annoying just as often as it is charming. The main character, Jack Pepper is perhaps the most annoying one of all, constantly quipping and making references to other media in ways I’m sure was intended to be cute, but left me feeling empty. I had fun playing Mouse P.I. when it actually let me have a gun in my hands. I enjoyed the boss battles. There was never a moment that I was not in complete awe of what the artists and animators did with everything that was on screen. It was one delight after another that almost made up for the by the numbers and inconsistent gameplay. It’s shocking to me that I feel this way for a game that I assumed would be an easy lay up for my tastes. It was too long and too unfocused to the point where I was ready for it to be over long before the credits rolled. Mouse P.I. really does look and sound as cool as it appears, it’s just not as fun as those standout elements might suggest it is. Having said that, it’s hard to argue that you won’t get your moneys worth at such an affordable price…but in a landscape where there is so much to play you could absolutely spend your time better elsewhere.

@InfiniteGrunt Thanks a lot dude. I thought this would be an easy game to just love, but it’s really not as good as a game as you’d imagine it is. Shame too because it looks and sounds so damn cool.

That feeling when you’re more hyped for games you’ve already played than new ones.

Xbox 2019 to 2023: - Series X announced at TGA’s - Halo Infinite - Forza Horizon 5 - Xbox Series S lower price entry point - Starfield - $19.99 Game Pass Ultimate - Avowed, Fable, Indiana Jones, Gears & more on the way - FPS Boost/HDR Backwards Compatibility - Acquisitions that made sense (Bethesda, Obsidian, InXile, etc) Call me naive, dumb or green pilled, but this was the Xbox I wanted after the catastrophic start of the Xbox One. This was the path to the return of the Xbox 360 era. They had it, they were on the right track.
