I watched “Children of the Blitz” last night.. 60,000 UK civilians were killed 2 million houses were destroyed. 1 million children separated from their parents It took nearly 20 years to recover from the war. This is the easy life many young people think older people had.

@Pergament_F Can I ask a language question. The letters look cyrillic. Could someone Russian understand that sign, or is it as silly as saying can someone English understand Polish?

Belgrade. "Please. The tomcat does not like knocking on the glass." There is something almost painfully Balkan in this sentence. Not luxury. Not efficiency. Not Scandinavian emotional minimalism. Just an entire bookstore quietly reorganizing reality around the psychological comfort of one sleeping cat. And honestly, after looking at modern civilization for long enough, I increasingly trust the judgment of bookstores and cats more than the judgment of people who use the phrase "global leadership summit."

There’s recently been a rule of thumb among Westminster wags that there’s no situation so bad that a speech by Keir Starmer can’t make it worse. From the overnight briefing of what the PM plans to say at 10:00 this morning that adage looks like being proved again. ‘Strength through fairness’ (meaningless) ‘Putting Britain at the heart of Europe’ (they talk of nothing else at the Dog and Duck). ‘Hope, urgency’ (whatever) ‘Incremental change won’t cut it’ (said it before — so what really big change, rupture do you have in mind?). Ho hum. Tumbleweed already blowing through Downing Street.

In 1983, five old Red Army comrades meet at the famous building they had defended in Stalingrad, it became the legendary "Pavlov's house" after Junior Sergeant Yakov Pavlov They held it for 60 days (roughly late September to 25 November 1942), repelling repeated German infantry and tank assaults, sometimes multiple times per day. Remarkably, Civilians sheltered in the basement throughout. German forces labeled it a "fortress" on maps and overestimated the Soviet numbers inside due to the intense resistance. The defense exemplified the brutal, close-quarters urban fighting in Stalingrad. Soviet commander Vasily Chuikov later said- "The Germans lost more men trying to capture Pavlov's House than they did taking Paris"

My FIL received a letter from his NHS hospital trust yesterday giving him an appointment regarding skin cancer surgery. He also received a letter on the same day cancelling the appointment. He is elderly and was quite baffled so I rang them up to check what was happening and where he now was on the waiting list. They said he had been removed from the list. I asked why and they couldn’t give me an answer. I asked if the surgery had been rescheduled to which they said no. I asked if it was going to be rescheduled and they said “no, because he isn’t on the waiting list” !!!!!! I was obvs upset and the lady said she would try and fix it and i now have to call back on Monday. Is this how Starmer is fixing the NHS? #NHS #waitinglists
