@anon_opin Top of the Pops remaining on TV should have been a non-negotiable part of BBC output, written in to the charter. It was an intrinsic part of Britain. Our culture lost a huge amount the day it was cancelled.

Zia Yusuf calls the Equality Act "unfit" can't say why. It protects you from being fired for pregnancy or race. Reform loses candidates to scandals. The only unfit thing? Their judgment. 🇬🇧

@BrianRSolomon I find late 80s and early 90s far more fascinating, even though I was obsessed with the business during the Attitude Era. Every year from say 87 to 97 saw such fascinating shifts, and the presentation was timeless. I could watch Clash of the Champions intros all day.

The most ironic thing about being obsessed with old wrestling footage and watching it all the time is that the three things I never, ever revisit are: WWF Attitude Era, WCW nWo era, and ECW.

Anti-trust legislation really fucked over a lot of the British TV industry because the legislators didn't see the threat coming. The BBC had to *fight* to increase the 30-day limit on iPlayer because Ofcom thought that it'd be too much of an advantage over competitors
Cameron Yarde Jnr@CameronYardeJnr

A history of divvy decisions have hurt British broadcasting. Project Kangaroo, which would've had a joint BBC/ITV/Channel 4 VOD service, being axed. The junk food ban killing advertising & therefore budget for CITV, the 1990 Broadcasting Act, BBC3's linear Chanel closed. Ruinous!

What is clear is that the collapse of linear advertising (incl junk food advertising) has caused children’s television funding to collapse in the uk. With streamers not really interested in investment it is just the BBC keeping it going.

@CameronYardeJnr Yep, no foresight whatsoever when it was blocked. It was all ready to be rolled out too. Gave an open goal to American big tech companies to take all the market share from British broadcasters. Doesn’t look like they’ll ever recover the lost ground. Insane decision.

@TheCyberdevil Such a shame they got rid of the kids blocks on linear channels. That was the beginning of the end and should have been protected for the good of our culture.

I think this is such a terrible shame. A 42 year old brand that has been a part of so many childhoods just fading away. Kids deserve good British TV. It’s just CBBC left now.
Media Central UK@MCUK_Official

In TV news, the CITV block on ITV2 is officially ending on 10th April. This really means the end of the iconic CITV brand that's been around for 42 years. Farewell CITV, this time for real. CBBC will have some of CITV's programming while the rest will be under ITVX Kids

Bede in Warwickshire, if there was ever an opportunity for a ward to do the right thing on 7th May 2026 this is it. Your local authority didn't have the bottle, so it's over to you; get rid of the kid. #ReformUK

@GuyLambertUK @Shuttsapalooza I worked at the BBC for 15 years so feel your pain. But at the same time the commissioning, whether through lack of budget or strategic issues, has been flawed - taking away blocks on linear channels, replacing live Saturday morning shows with cooking. The excitement has gone.

@LawtonGamst @Shuttsapalooza I work in kids TV and that’s untrue. Thousands of us have lost work thanks to repeated smashing of the BBC Licence Fee via Government and absolutely no support from Lisa Nandy now. The TV industry is collapsing and no politician cares. If the public want good TV, demand it

How kids watch stuff now is insane to me. I was at a family thing the other day, yapping away with the kids, asked what their favourite TV show is & they all just said YouTube. Not even a person on it. Imagine asking a 7 year old Shutts his favourite show & he just goes “BBC Two”
