Most players believe what they see and don't know what (if anything) they're missing. They learn nothing from their hands, they think variance makes it impossible to grow from the feedback poker is giving them They think every spot is close 😭 The truth is most spots don't matter in themselves. It's about taking a position with your entire gameplan and taking them into your zone of the jungle.

I know more than one people who can guess betas and correlations visually. Once I met a person (not joking) who guessed the correlation using one data point. So I decided to train my eyes. You can do it too and influence people and win friends.

nearly everything that is a good repeatable trading idea looks like: "under <some circumstances> this thing is likely to be too cheap/rich because <some people> are being forced or greedy or stupid... so the thing is more likely to go up/down in the future"

at some point, volatility is going to spike a lot. and lots of you are going to get rekt cos you didn't have a good plan for what to do, or you didn't stick to it. i can't have that on my conscience - i got enough already - so pls read this and make a plan.

what rentech do? some thread. i also collect some resources that kind of support the points mentions. see below
Doug Colkitt@0xdoug

If you can find an archive of the NuclearPhynance forums, there was a really good long running thread there about RennTech. Most of the general consensus was around: 1) They’re not really playing HFT games. You can see that they don’t have a footprint in things you’d expect HFTs to have (eg captive broker-dealer) 2) Medallion is mostly trading short term stat arb time frames. Probably just above HFT time frames, where portfolio management becomes a lot more relevant and HFTs don’t want to hold risk. 3) This short horizon stat arb is very heavily loaded on t-costs, because the magnitudes of moves is small. 4) RennTech has *a lot* of alphas all in one place. Any of these alphas alone is only marginally profitable because of t-costs. But stack many orthogonal signals and you start consistently triggering trades. The sum is more than the parts, and there are returns to scale. 5) Medallion seems to also collect a lot of weird anomalies, that just work but aren’t really easily explainable. These anomalies tend to persist for a long time because they’re not intuitive. 6) Their employees tend to be really loyal. Most trading firms have high turnover, hiring people to bring in more strats, but also a lot of people constantly leaving, leaking strays. RennTech really has neither. So they have higher returns to “weird alpha”, because quants are leaving for competitors and leaking the secret sauce. 7) Despite all the PhDs, most of the modeling is probably simple. Not much more beyond regression. But they have a very good pipeline with a lot of data, making it easy for researchers to find new signals, then turning that around to a huge number of markets with very efficient trading. Again, returns to scale and breadth are probably the real moat

It *is* linear in the parameters but that's not why it's called linear regression. It's called that because it's linear in the independent variables. Of course, the independent variables themselves can have arbitrary non-linear dependence on the data, but the model can't discover that, it needs to be put in exogenously. Unlike nonlinear methods (trees, nets, knn, svm etc) which can discover nonlinear relationships between the independent and dependent variables as part of the fitting process.

Alpha leak of the day: improving beta models is alpha. Finding signal (alpha) is really hard because it's buried under tons of noise. Beta models are a de-noising technique. A way of saying "this stuff doesn't matter". Better betas = a better lens to view markets.
