Balkan people in general seem to be particularly prone to believing in conspiracy theories. In a previous job all 7 of my Balkan colleagues (Bosnians, Albanians, North Macedonians, etc.) espoused every conspiracy known to man, both about their own history (e.g. Bosnian pyramids, Alexander the Great's tomb has been found in Northern Macedonia but the government refuses access to everyone) and more global topics such as aliens, American weather control and 9/11.
Not sure why. Perhaps being smaller states that have been either mostly occupied by others for centuries or warred against each other and needing to forge a national identity, there lack of historical agency about the direction of these countries that favors conspiratorial explanations of their predicament, or invents a glorious past to balance the negatives.

Some leftists on here think it's fun or politically important to dunk on me, but I wish they'd sometimes engage substantively on the actual debates: i.e. what are the most effective ways to organize in solidarity with Palestine and Iran inside the US, not *whether* we should do so

@Ljiljana1972 This. Hatred for the martial textbook took me to the works of Marx, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Freud, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Hegel, Fanon, etc. I chose courses this way. "Hmm, interesting, I like existentialism...wait...just one fat *textbook* & a skimpy 'reader'!? Forget it."

I really need to repeat my story again. I ended up studying philosophy because I discovered that the other dept I was interested in (psychology) relied mostly on textbooks not real books and I wanted to study real books 😁(these are the exact words I used as a high schooler).

@OurLadyofAntifa @orzelc @zenahitz Is that really true? Granted, most of my experience is in STEM, but also my non-STEM experience is that studying at intro to intermediate level is greatly facilitated by material being synthesised in textbooks. Research level may be different.

Are there no longer any world renowned philosophers? I can’t think of anyone in their 50s or 60s now that has the influence of a Rawls or Habermas— neither of them were as influential as Foucault. Of course, I’m not that familiar with the state of philosophy in China or Africa.
