Our hearts go out to the people in Colorado impacted by a wildfire disaster in a time and place that should be snow-covered and freezing. Climate change-driven droughts and windstorms mixed with powerlines running from fossil fuel-fired plants: a recipe for more disasters.

We're excited to share this virtual aerial tour of the 2020 North Complex fire with fire scientist Dr. Scott Stephens and @EcoFlight1. Dr. Stephens shares insights into the fire effects, and where fuel treatments were/were not effective. #goodfire youtu.be/4cU6frm0U84

. @CraigKohlruss & I were amazed at what we saw with @JohnMuirProject last month in a large, severe burn scar: Thousands of sequoias growing back, some taller than us. But almost none where fire burned low/moderate. Exclusive report + photos/videos here: fresnobee.com/news/californi…
John Muir Project@JohnMuirProject

#GiantSequoias grow back& fast in high-intensity fire for 3 reasons: 1) Flames burn off the spongy bed of plant materials above the soil 2) Seedling roots can reach a nutrient-rich bed of mineral ash 3) More sunlight coming through the canopy=more growth! ow.ly/ryxI50GSgWn

Really helpful summary of where forest management did (and didn't) affect fire behavior near Chester during the Dixie Fire. Kudos to @wildland_zko for creating media that helps the public understand how nuanced forestry/wildfire decisions really are. youtu.be/Qp2ss13iKNA

"Removing these provisions would continue to leave federal agencies without the resources needed to change the trajectory of wildfire behavior on our forests and would ensure that severe and destructive wildfire seasons remain a reality for millions of Americans each year."

"The scientific consensus is clear; the forest and fire management programs supported by the Build Back Better package work to restore forests and increase climate- and wildfire-adaptation of forests and nearby communities."

We hope that @CAL_FIRE and the @forestservice pay attention to this report as they build capacity to do more burning. Your social license for #goodfire is increasing, even in areas where wildfire risk is high.

@JaredDahlAldern Region 5 is at least planning for maintenance burning within areas that burned at low/moderate severity in 2020/2021 (and maybe as far back as 2018 on the Mendocino NF). We were told to expect a proposed action in February.

@ConnieB_PFT It means reforesting to facilitate the reintroduction of beneficial fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem (rather than a closely spaced plantation that will either require pre-commercial thinning or reburn at high severity).

Interesting thread on how multiple high severity fires can cause type conversion from forests to shrublands. This is one reason that we support thoughtful, fire-forward reforestation (not tree plantations) in large high severity patches.
